So knapp die Zeilen oft sind und so förmlich das >Liebe Miss Beach bis zum Schluß bleibt - was auf dem Strom dieser über 200 Mit-teilungen herüberkommt, ist ele-mentar: In ihr hatte er eine, auf die konnte er sich verlassen. (In ihrem Buchladen war ständig, quasi als ge-räumiges Postfach, ein Seekoffer von ihm abgestellt.) Und auf seine karge Art in diesen Dingen läßt Joyce auch seine Dankbarkeit spüren. Sylvia Beach war eine der wichtig-sten Figuren in Joyces literarischer Karriere. Sie lancierte ihn, sie unter-stützte und beschützte ihn; sie gab ihm viel mehr, als sie je bekam. Immerhin wurde sie durch diese Ver-bindung zur Verlegerin des bedeu-tendsten englischsprachigen Ro-mans des zwanzigsten Jahrhunderts. Die hier gesammelten Briefe, kennt-nisreich kommentiert, stellen die erste vollständige Dokumentation dieser bemerkenswerten Beziehung dar. Joyces Briefe belegen in sprechenden Einzelheiten die Sorgen eines großen Autors. Sie enthüllen, daß Joyce trotz der Veröffentlichung und dem Erfolg von Ulysses den größten Teil seines Lebens um Anerkennung rin-gen mußte. Überdies bezeugen sie Sylvia Beachs fortwährende Geduld mit dem fordernden, sie rücksichts-los in Anspruch nehmenden Joyce, ihren eigenen finanziellen Schwie-rigkeiten zum Trotz. Erstaunt es uns, daß Joyce ein Werkegoist von hohen Graden war? Daß ihm beispielsweise ein Wort in der französischen Übersetzung des Ulysses eine Ansichtskarte wert ist die sogleich einen Suchauftrag an zwei Personen einschließt? Was er gibt, was er schenkt, sind Brocken seines kauzig-kaustischen Wortwit-zes und Einblicke in das Werden eines Werkes. Eigentliche Herzens-ergießungen enthalten Joyces Briefe an Sylvia Beach ebensowenig wie beispielsweise Goethes Briefwechsel mit seinem Verleger Cotta.
