[From back cover] Costume authority, stage designer, and scholar, Herbert Norris envisioned the history of wearing apparel as a series of great tableaux which he brilliantly described in an encyclopedic four-volume history of fashion. The present study?part of that monumental effort? presents a rich and inclusive panorama of clothing styles of the nineteenth century. The exceptionally detailed narrative focuses not only on clothing worn during the reign of particular monarchs, but also provides commentary on the social milieu and activities of the period.
