In dieser Vollständigkeit außerordentlich selten. Unter den bekanntesten sind: Der arme Heinrich. Nach Hartmann von Aue, Herzog Ernst, Rübezahl, Der Schwanenritter, Gri…seldis, Der märkische Eulenspiegel, Genoveva, Von den sieben Schwaben, Die Schildbürger, Schöne Magelone, Melusine, Faust, Fortunat, Heymonskinder, Tristan und Isolde, Reineke Fuchs, Eulenspiegel u. v. a. Die Holzschnitte Richters gehören zu den frühesten Buchillustrationen des Künstlers. "Diese Arbeiten sind . die ersten, die er für jene Technik schuf, in der ihm so große Erfolge bevorstehen sollten. Zum ersten Male blitzt in seinem Schaffen der Humor auf" (Rümann, Illustr. Buch, S. 268). Das einzige so vollständige, überkomplette Exemplar können wir in den vergangenen 30 Jahren nur bei Trauzettel 1900 nachweisen dort mit Abbildung aller Titel. Die Anmerkung dort ist so erhellend, dass wir sie hier leicht gekürzt wiedergeben: "Dass tatsächlich 55 Bände (die Nummern 51 und 52 sind aus mir unbekannten Gründen jeweils zweimal vergeben) erschienen sind, war nicht einmal den Herausgebern einer Neuausgabe 1985 ff. bekannt, wo im Vorwort des Verlags zum Kommentarband zu lesen ist: 'Die zwischen 1838 und 1848 von Otto Wigand in Leipzig erschienenen, zum größten Teil von G. O. Marbach bearbeiteten und herausgegebenen Volksbücher stellen die wohl umfassendste Sammlung dieser Buchgattung dar. Da die insgesamt 53 [!] Bände der Ausgabe heute nur noch in wenigen großen Bibliotheken vollständig erhalten sind, soll [diese Neuausgabe] einem breiteren Leserkreis ein bemerkenswertes Stück literarischen Kulturgutes seit dem Mittelalter näherbringen.' (Volksbücher. Einleitung und Kommentar. Stuttgart 1985, S. 5). Motive und Stoffe reichen bis ins Mittelalter zurück, zu Volksbüchern konnten sie erst werden, ohne dass dieser Begriff schon geformt war, als die Fähigkeit zu lesen auch in den armen Schichten verbreitet war und Bedarf an billiger Lektüre die massenhafte Herstellung rentabel machte. Dies war in der zweiten Hälfte des 17. Jh.s der Fall (Menke datiert die erste 'Volksbuch-Ausgabe' des Reineke Fuchs auf ca 1660), in der Folge schwoll die Anzahl der von fliegenden Händlern vertriebenen Hefte gewaltig an. Aus den von der 'hohen Literatur' verachteten Niederungen wurde die Gattung von den Romantikern geholt, denen sie anfangs in erster Linie Stoffquelle war (Tieck), dann aber als authentische Verbindung zu dem als nationale deutsche Identität stiftenden Mittelalter verstanden wurde. In diesem Sinn und angelehnt an Herders Volkslieder (1778) formulierte zuerst J. Görres den Begriff (Die teutschen Volksbücher. Nähere Würdigung der schönen Historien-, Wetter- und Arzneybüchlein . Heidelberg, bey Mohr und Zimmer 1807). Verschiedene erfolgreiche Volksbücher-Sammlungen der späteren Romantik und Biedermeierzeit belegen das Bedürfnis des Publikums nach einer solchen, das 'deutsche Gemüt' ansprechenden Lektüre. Der vorliegenden kommt besondere, das Genre prägende Bedeutung wegen der Illustrationen Ludwig Richters, seinen ersten Holzschnitten, zu. 'Ebenso wie die Texte der Volksbücher erfüllten die Illustrationen Richters die Sehnsucht der Leser nach Heimeligkeit und Überschaubarkeit' (Volksbücher, S.14). Bemerkenswert, da sozialgeschichtlich bedeutsam ist, dass diese erfolgreichste und langlebigste aller dieser Sammlungen von dem jungdeutschen G. O. Marbach herausgegeben wurde ('Oswald Marbach, der Volksbuchherausgeber, ist der Confuseste aller Menschen, besonders aber [cum - tum] der Hegelianer.' Friedrich Engels, 1840) und im gleichen 'linken' Verlag O. Wigand erschien wie die Schriften der Linkshegelianer Friedrich Engels, Max Stirner, Arnold Ruge, Ludwig Feuerbach u.a. Spuren dieses Umfelds lassen sich in einzelnen der späten Hefte finden, so in den Dorfgesprächen (No.51, 52), wo 'neben nützlichen Informationen aufs ein.
