Die 147 im Hauptteil behandelten Stoffe aus Ägypten, Persien und Mesopotamien, Spanien und Nordafrika umfassen rund ein Drittel sämtlicher mittelalterlicher Textilien der Stiftung. Obwohl zahlenmässig nicht sehr gross, enthält diese Gruppe eine Reihe von hervorragenden, aus künstlerischen, webtechnischen oder geschichtlichen Gründen bedeutenden Stücken. Die frühesten aus Ägypten stammenden Stoffe datieren aus der Zeit der Oberherrschaft der abbasidischen Kalifen; die meisten sind jedoch während der zweihundertjährigen Regierung der Fatimiden entstanden (969-1171), unter denen das Land als Zentrum des schiitischen Gegenkalifats eine Sonderstellung in der islamischen Welt einnahm. Die Entwicklung der gewirkten, aus Inschriften und Dekorbändern bestehenden Muster lässt sich anhand der über 60 Katalognummern gut verfolgen. Später, unter den Mamluken, finden sich Stoffe mit mehrheitlich gewebtem Dekor, die eine erstaunliche Vielfalt von Bindungen und Techniken aufweisen, einige davon aus China übernommen. Aus Persien und Mesopotamien stammt eine kleine, aber bedeutende Gruppe von Geweben des 11. bis 13. Jahrhunderts. Die eindrücklichsten gehören zu den vor 70 Jahren aus den Ruinen eines fürstlichen Grabturmes bei Ray zutage geförderten Textilien, einem berühmten Fund, der eine Vorstellung von den Prunkstoffen am Kalifenhof in Baghdad vermittelt.
