(illustrated (worn copy, weak but intact hinges, light bumping and wear at edges and corners, some soiling to rear cover, remants of some black-marker (or grease-pencil) numerals (an old price?) on the spine; old gift inscription (non-authorial) on front endpaper, dated Chri…stmas 1922]. (frontispiece + 7 b&w illustrated plates) Boys' historical adventure fiction, set during the Revolutionary War. The author (1848-1912) got his first job as a journalist at age 13. His first book, which would remain his best-known work, was "Toby Tyler; or, Ten Weeks with a Circus" (1881). Wikipedia: "Following the book's success he went on to author numerous other children's books, mostly historical and adventure novels. Like most writers of his era, he was astonishingly prolific, and a total of nearly 200 books by him have been identified. Most were signed with the Otis name, but he also used the pen names Walter Morris, Lt. James K. Orton, Harry Prentice, and Amy Prentice." (As collectors know, juvenile fiction can be bibliographically very complicated, and is not a specialty of mine, so I cannot authoritatively state this to be the first printing. If you would like additional details to make that determination for yourself, please inquire and I'll be glad to supply them.). Illustrated by L.J. Bridgman (illustratore).
