Mai 1874 in Römerstadt / Tschechien; gest. am 13. Juni 1948 in New York) war Professor für Neurologie in Wien und New York City und Verfasser zahlreicher Arbeiten zu Themen…der Neurologie und Neuropathologie, insbesondere zur Multiplen Sklerose und zu Tumoren des Zentralnervensystems. Nach ihm ist die akute maligne Verlaufsform der Multiplen Sklerose (Typ Marburg) benannt, deren Erstbeschreibung er 1905 vornahm. 1905 habilitierte sich Otto Marburg in Wien für Neurologie, 1912 wurde er zum außerordentlichen und 1919 zum ordentlichen Professor berufen. Er trat zudem 1919 die Nachfolge Heinrich Obersteiners am Neurologischen Institut an. Ab 1914 war er Mitglied er Leopoldina. Nach dem Anschluss Österreichs 1938 wurde Marburg wie zahlreiche andere Dozenten der Wiener Universität aufgrund seiner jüdischen Herkunft zwangspensioniert Marburg und seine Frau verließen das Land und emigrierten über England in die Vereinigten Staaten.

Wien, wurde 1899 promoviert, war Assistent am dortigen Neurologischen Institut und bildete sich neben der pathologisch-anatomischen Arbeit in Neurologie und klinischer Psychiatrie weiter.…1905 für Neurologie habilitiert, wurde er 1917 a.o., 1919 o. Prof. der Neurologie und übernahm die Leitung des Wiener Neurologischen Instituts. Seit 1914 war er Mitglied der Deutschen Akademie der Naturforscher Leopoldina. Nach dem "Anschluß" Österreichs an das Deutsche Reich emigrierte er in die USA, wo er als Prof. am College of Physicians and Surgeons der Columbia University in New York arbeitete. Schwerpunkte seiner wissenschaftlichen Forschung waren Schädigungen des Zentralnervensystems und Multiple Sklerose. Er veröffentlichte u.a. das Standardwerk "Mikroskopisch-topographischer Atlas des menschlichen Zentralnervensystems "(1904). (Quelle DBE).

"Es ist Dank der Studien der pathologischen Anatomen absolut sicher, daß Tumoren durch ein Trauma entstehen können, was aus den eben erwähnten, ebenso aufschlußreichen als grundlegenden Forschungen B. Fischer-Wasels (Metaplasie und… Gewebsmißbildung) hervorgeht. Hat doch schon Virchow das Gliom in ätiologische Beziehung zum Trauma gestellt. Es erschien darum sehr merkwürdig, daß sich die Anschauungen der Neurologen in jüngster Zeit sehr wesentlich gegen die Rolle des Traumas als ätiologischen Faktor der Hirntumoren ausgesprochen haben. Denn wenn man die älteren Autoren (ich nenne nur Byron Bramwell, Allen Starr) heranzieht, so wird dem Trauma eine überragende Rolle in der Ätiologie der Hirntumoren beigemessen. In einer kürzlich erschienenen Arbeit von Beckmann finden sich verschiedene Statistiken dieser Art zusammengestellt. So hat Gerhard in 60 Fällen von Gliomen 17% traumatisch entstandene, in den selbst beobachteten Fällen 36% gefunden. Adler, der 1086 Fälle zusammenstellte, fand 91 mal das Trauma, das sind 8,8%. Müller gibt sogar für seine Stirnhirntumoren 18,75% an, Hübschmann in 107 Fällen 7,5%. Ich will nicht alle Zahlen anführen, aber nur aus neuerer Zeit noch v. Monakow erwähnen, der unter 100 Hirntumorfällen 30mal das Kopftrauma angegeben findet. Was aber bedeutungsvoller ist, er hat in 41 durch die Sektion erhärteten eigenen Fällen 10mal ein schweres Kopftrauma mit größter Wahrscheinlichkeit als Anstoß für die Tumorbildung gefunden.
