Hoyle was a specialist in deep sea creatures, who worked on classification and illustrations from the Challenger Expedition. He authored many of the first descriptions of many cephalopods.Ink inscription of Hoyle's wife, Mabel, to the recto to the front endpaper, 'Leonard + Sarah, from Mabel + Will, Christmas 1918'. Hoyle and Mabel married in 1918. In the original publisher's cloth binding. Externally, smart. Light marks to the boards and spine. Minor bumping to the spine and extremities. Front hinge is starting but firm. Bookplate to the front paste down. Prior owner's ink inscription to the recto to the front endpaper. Internally, firmly bound.
