The author traces the Countess Matilda's extensive landholdings, which spread across northern Italy, encompassing cities, castles, and vast tracts of countryside. Through meticulous research, the book uncovers the origins of Matilda's wealth, documenting how she inherited properties from her ancestors and acquired others through shrewd political alliances and careful management. The author examines the legal and feudal frameworks that shaped Matilda's control over her vast holdings, shedding light on the complex power structures of medieval Italy. Paperback. Condizione: New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the historical development of the Westphalian city of Hamm, shedding light on its origins, legal framework, and the evolving relationship between its citizenry and the regional rulers. The author traces Hamm's transformation from a rural settlement to a thriving urban center, exploring the interplay of political, economic, and social forces that shaped its destiny. Hamm's emergence as a significant city in the Middle Ages is examined through the lens of its legal privileges, granted by successive rulers to foster its growth and prosperity. The book analyzes the city's complex legal status, caught between the competing claims of the local nobility and the increasingly powerful territorial lords. This tension forms the backdrop for a detailed examination of Hamm's evolving self-governance, as its citizens gradually asserted their autonomy while navigating the constraints imposed by external authorities. The author provides a nuanced exploration of the social and economic life of Hamm's inhabitants, encompassing the roles of guilds, religious institutions, and the landed elite. The book sheds light on the city's vibrant artisan culture, the struggles of its working class, and the strategies employed by its ruling class to maintain their dominance. Ultimately, this book offers valuable insights into the intricate dynamics of urban development in medieval Germany. By examining the legal, political, and social history of Hamm, the author illuminates the broader processes of state formation, social differentiation, and the rise of urban autonomy that characterized this transformative era.
