Aggiungi al carrello[8], 321pp, [1]. With 24 engraved plates illustrating numerous geometric constants. Attractively bound in recent calf-backed marbled boards. Some marginal foxing to prelims., otherwise an exemplary copy. Jacques Ozanam (1640-1717) French mathematician. Of a Catholic family with Jewish descent, Ozanam discarded theological study on the death of his father and began offering private instruction in mathematics, a subject in which he was apparently self-taught. This present work contains much of interest to mathematical study on the subject of geometrical theories. Size: 8vo. …

Twelve engraved folding plates at the rear, tables to the text. Light browning, otherwise very good in contemporary mottled calf, raised bands to the spine, spine gilt in compartments, a little rubbed overall, corners of upper board rubbed through, upper joint slightly cracked, head- and tail-caps chipped, but by no means unattractive. Piece lacking from outer spine. xxiv, 481pp. 1pp. corrigenda, [4pp.] privilege, [6pp.] publisher's catalogue. Paris, Ch. Ant. Jombert, Originally destined for the clergy, Ozanam was a self-taught mathematician of some brilliance, and in 1670 he published trigonometric and logarithmic tables far more accurate than those extant at the time. He moved from Lyon to Paris and made a comfortable living teaching mathematics to private pupils, all the while publishing a series of popular texts on aspects of mathematics, also a Traité de Fortification. The Catholic Encyclopaedia describes him as ". devout, charitable, courageous, and of simple faith. As a young man he had overcome a passion for gaming. He was wont to say that it was for the doctors of the Sorbonne to dispute, for the pope to decide, and for a mathematician to go to heaven in a perpendicular line." As suggested by the sub-title this work provides a basic grounding in all aspects of measurement and surveying; arithmetic, geometry, trigonometry, surveying, levelling, estimation, and geodesy. Practical applications within the world of architecture and building are demonstrated and tables of multiplication and the planking of wood are included.
