Der junge Fotograf ging 1950 nach Südafrika und arbeitete dort für Drum, die erste Zeitschrift für schwarze Leser, später etwa auch für Time Life und den stern . In den frühen Fünfzigerjahren porträtierte er den jungen Anwalt Nelson Mandela oder die Sängerin Miriam Makeba und das wilde Nachtleben im dynamischen schwarzen Stadtteil Sophiatown. Die ungeschönte Darstellung der ärmlichen Lebensumstände eines Großteils der schwarzen Bevölkerung wurde schließlich zu seinem Hauptanliegen.
