EEN DEFINITIE VAN HET VOEGWOORDELIJK BIJWOORD. Wie aan de hand van onze spraakkunsten iets over het voegwoordelijk bijwoord zou willen te weten te komen, zou al vlug moeten constateren dat deze woordsoort door de grammatici op ietwat stiefmoederlijke wijze behandeld is. De gegevens die erover verstrekt worden zijn inderdaad vrij schaars, meestal oppervlakkig en dikwijls ook met elkaar in tegenspraak. Ook in de terminologie heerst enige verwarring : zo spreken bv. Hasselbach (1) en Coppé (2) niet van voegwoordelijke bijwoorden maar van betrekkelijke voegwoorden en pleit De Vooys (3) voor de term zinsverbindende woorden, welke benaming vroeger al door Overdiep (4) werd gebruikt. Nergens hebben wij een preciese definitie van het voegwoordelijk bijwoord aangetroffen : doorgaans wordt slechts op enkele kenmerken gewezen en dan met een paar voorbeelden worden geïllustreerd. Implíciet kunnen de voegwoordelijke bijwoorden gedefinieerd worden als bijwoorden die een eigenschap met de voegwoorden gemeen hebben : zoals de nevenschikkende voegwoorden verbinden ze twee nevengeschikte zinnen of zinsdelen met elkaar. Aldus gedefinieerd omvatten de voegwoordelijke bijwoorden echter ook woorden als : daarin, hierop, . (dus alle voornaamwoordelijke bijwoorden), die zeker ook een zin een bijwoordelijke functie kunnen hebben en tegelijk ook kunnen verwijzen naar een andere zin of moeten een verval ervan) en de comparatieven van bijwoorden. Het beste lijkt ons dan ook de voegwoordelijke bijwoorden te definiëren als bijwoorden die twee zinnen met elkaar verbinden op dezelfde wijze als de nevenschikkende voegwoorden (de plaatsingskenmerken buiten beschouwing gelaten), d.w.z. dat ze een (1) W. Ook de voornaamwoordelijke voegwoordelijke comparatieven worden door Overdiep bij de zinsverbindende woorden ingedeeld. 7 naam in onze eeuwenoude spellinggeschiedenis als vlagvoerder van het Vlaamse taalpartikularisme is blijven voortleven, dankt Des Roches meer aan de onberaden ijver van late en bekrompen bewonderaars en navolgers dan aan zichzelf.
