Ich machte den Anfang meiner Studien mit Cantors Mathematischen Beiträgen, welche gerade in der Geschichte der Zahlzeichen ihren geistigen Mittelpunkt finden und mir viel der Belehrung und Anregung boten; ich wandte mich zu den zumal in der Boethius-Frage auf gerade entgegengesetztem Standpunkte stehenden Arbeiten von Friedlein; ich verarbeitete eine Reihe anderer cinschlagender Schriften, deren Verwerthung, zum Theile wenigstens, mir vielleicht unmöglich gewesen wäre ohne das ungemeine Entgegenkommen Cantors, der mir langandauernde Benützung ihm gehöriger Werke bereitwilligst gestattete, wofür ihm öffentlich hier meinen Dank aussprechen zu können mir zur Freude gereicht.
