Pictorial endpapers. The writings of Major Cocks, who was also MP for Reigate, from 1806, served in the Peninsular from 1808 until his death in action in 1812 at the Siege of Burgos. A particular favourite of wellington, he had carried out deep probing missions behind enemy lines to gain intelligence. These letters and diaries were edited by Julia V. Page(b.1929), born in Maidstone, who taught at service schools in Germany and later at a London College of Education before becoming a historian.
