Hardcover. Condizione: new. Hardcover. The struggle to realize and to express my nature is my lifes meaning. Erica Rutherford Erica Rutherford: Her Lives and Works accompanies a career-spanning retrospective exhibition of this multidisciplinary Canadian artist and transgender pioneer. An artist, actor, filmmaker, farmer, teacher, and writer, Erica Rutherfords remarkably multifaceted career took her across several countries and continents before settling on Prince Edward Island in the 1970s. There she established herself as a painter and printmaker, using art to engage in a reflection on gender construction and agency. This remarkable retrospective includes reproductions of more than 60 paintings, prints, and drawings, as well as personal photographs. An interview with Rutherfords widow, artist Gail Rutherford, accompanies critical essays by scholars and curators examining Rutherfords stylistic evolution from dark semi-abstract collages to hard-edged Pop Art. Says editor and curator Pan Wendt, In retrospect, Rutherfords work represents a courageous and often solitary mission of working through questions that are only now part of the mainstream public discourse. Although principally known for his abstract paintings, Andrus has, throughout his career, combined his first love - drawing - with a deep engagement with colour, a desire for experimentation, a keen interest in the physical qualities of his materials, and the sensory experience of the viewer. Donald Andrus: The Shape of Desire brings together four major essays, including one by the artist, and more than eighty full-colour reproductions to assess a body of work that extends from abstract paintings to portraits. Roslyn Rosenfeld writes about Andrus's early abstract work, Ihor Holubizky considers Andrus's portraits, and Pan Wendt revisits Andrus's contemporary abstract paintings. Taken together, the essays and images take full measure of the entirety of Andrus's career and influences - from the landscapes of Greece and the poetry of George Seferis to the cinematic works of Andrei Tarkovsky and the pioneering work of contemporary German artists Gerhard Richter and Anselm Kiefer. Donald Andrus has been painting for over thirty-five years. His work has been exhibited at galleries and museums throughout Canada and may be found in both private and public collections. He has previously worked as a curator at the Beaverbrook Art Gallery, as a lecturer at the University of New Brunswick, and as a professor of art history at Concordia University. Andrus now lives and works in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island.

Trade Paperback. Condizione: Very Good. A clean, unmarked book with a tight binding. Edge wear to bottom and corner of cover. 160 pages. 6 1/2"w x 9"h. From the publisher: "Since the 1970s, Vancouver-based multimedia artist Hank Bull has acted as a connecting figure between artists and artistic communities internationally. Inspired initially by experimental music, mail art, Fluxus, and the absurdist performances associated with Dada and pataphysics, much of his practice has been ephemeral and dialogic, produced for underground audiences in artist-run and improvised contexts. Performance, communication, and the building of networks have thus often eclipsed the production of material things. Yet, material things have played an important role in his career - as documents, as vehicles of communication, as props, and as aesthetic objects in their own right. This career overview considers the material traces of a life lived as art, reconfiguring the immense and varied collection of the artist as a sculptural installation. Running throughout Bulls practice is a re-examination of the notions of distributed authorship, an affront to received ideas ever more pertinent in the age of information technology. Hank Bull was born in Calgary, Alberta in 1949 and now lives in Vancouver. A multimedia artist as well as an arts administrator, he has been a member of the legendary Western Front Society since 1973. He is the also the founder and executive director of Centre A (Vancouver International Centre for Contemporary Asian Art) since 1999. His works have been collected by the National Gallery of Canada and many private collectors." Keywords: Frank Bull, Collectivity, Collaboration, Counterculture, Idealism, Exhibition Catalog, Mail art, Fluxus, Experimental Music, Dada, Absurd, Pataphysics.
