Vet at War is a history of the Australian Army Veterinary Corps, which was formed in the 1909 and phased out in 1946, when the arm became fully mechanised. From the early formation of armed militia forces in Australia, mounted troops, and transported animal have played a significant part in army operations and consequently veterinarians also have an important role. From the Sudan Contingent, the South Africa war, World War two, veterinarian have provided professional care for horses and other animals of the Australian Army.

Parsonson is a richly detailed account of a lesser-known but vital part of Australia's military history. The book traces the formation, operations, and eventual disbandment of the Australian Army Veterinary Corps, which played a crucial role in caring for horses, camels, and other animals used in military service. Here are some highlights: The Corps was established in 1909 and disbanded in 1946 as the army became fully mechanised. It covers the use of animals in conflicts from the Sudan Contingent and Boer War, through World War I and II, including the Imperial Camel Corps. The book includes surprising statistics, like 326,000 horse casualties in the British forces during the Boer War and 7,843 horses sent with the first AIF convoy to the Middle East in 1914.
