Hardcover. Condizione: Very good. Condizione sovraccoperta: Very good. Jose R. Lopez (Author photograph) (illustratore). xix, [1], 344, [2] pages. Index. Inscribed/initialed on fep. DJ in plastic sleeve. Daniel Patrick "Pat" Moynihan (March 16, 1927 - March 26, 2003) was an American politician, sociologist, and diplomat. A member of the Democratic Party, he represented New York in the United States Senate and served as an adviser to Republican U.S. President Richard Nixon. Born in Tulsa, Oklahoma, Moynihan moved at a young age to New York City. Following a stint in the navy, he earned a Ph.D. in history from Tufts University. He worked on the staff of New York Governor W. Averell Harriman before joining President John F. Kennedy's administration in 1961. He served as an Assistant Secretary of Labor under Kennedy and Johnson, devoting much of his time to the War on Poverty. Moynihan left the Johnson administration in 1965 and became a professor at Harvard University. In 1969, he accepted Nixon's offer to serve as an Assistant to the President for Domestic Policy. He left the administration at the end of 1970, and accepted appointment as United States Ambassador to India in 1973. He accepted President Gerald Ford's appointment to the position of United States Ambassador to the United Nations in 1975, holding that position until early 1976. Derived from a Kirkus review: Speeches and articles from the fertile mind of the Democratic Senator from N.Y., covering the crucial issues of the Reagan era. Moynihan is that rare breed, an intuitive politician yet a prolific intellectual presence. His intention here is to "present a sampling of political discourse of a particular time," irrespective of success or failure--a failure that he suggests arose from "cognitive dissonance," i.e., "the White House kept doing exactly what it was understood it would never do. To point to what actually was happening only induced confusion." That, however, didn't stop Moynihan from pointing--to everything from the perceived absurdities of Stockman's policies to New Right's designs on the legal system, attempting to replace the old triumvirate of "Debate, Legislate, Litigate" with Convene (a constitutional convention), Overrule (legislate over the Court's head), and Restrict (jurisdiction of certain courts); from Stockman's policy of engineering drastic deficits as a means of forcing Congress to dismantle social welfare programs to Reagan's Iran debacle. Throughout, we are given insight into Moynihan's pilgrimage away from neo-conservatism back to his earlier roots in welfare-statism. Surely one of the most felicitous political works to come out of the past eight years, no matter what one's views. First Edition [Stated], First Printing [Stated].
