From 1530 until the first decade of the 17th century many altarpieces in Rome were instead painted on stone, especially on slate. The invention of the technique is due to Sebastiano del Piombo (14851547) who employed it in his monumental Nativity of the Virgin for the Chigi Chapel in Santa Maria del Popolo. Il volume riesamina il processo a Federico Zuccari (1540 ca. - 1609), accusato di "eccessi" per aver disegnato un cartone satirico intitolato Porta Virtutis che illustrava il trionfo dell'artista virtuoso sui propri detrattori ignoranti. Esposto sulla facciata della chiesa di S. Luca nel giorno della festa dei pittori (18 ottobre 1581), il cartone scatenò l'ira del papa bolognese Gregorio XIII, causando l'espulsione di Federico e del Passignano, suo collaboratore, da tutto lo Stato della Chiesa, con la proibizione di intraprendere qualsiasi lavoro di pittura. Nessun altro pittore nella Roma di quel tempo fu processato e condannato per il contenuto di una sua opera. Federico sostenne sempre che la sua allegoria aveva un significato generico e non era diretta contro nessuno in particolare: intendeva semplicemente ammonire i colleghi e il pubblico a non esprimere giudizi negativi sulle opere altrui per invidia e presunzione. In realtà il cartone rappresentava esplicitamente lo scalco Paolo Ghiselli, intimo famigliare del papa, come un asino ignorante e i pittori bolognesi come abitanti del regno dell'ignoranza e della maldicenza. Temendo che Zuccari sottraesse loro commissioni anche a Bologna, come già aveva fatto a Roma, i bolognesi avevano infatti convinto lo scalco a rifiutare una pala d'altare realizzata da Federico per una cappella nella chiesa di S. Maria del Baraccano. Il processo è qui trascritto e annotato insieme alle lettere del pittore e dei suoi protettori.…
