Format in-8°. ------ 640 pages. *********************** Présentation éditeur : " Les vignettistes du XVIIIe siècle ont pour héritiers les illustrateurs qui se multiplient à partir de 1830, alors que se renouvellent le monde… de l'édition et les arts de la gravure. Au XIXe siècle, presque tous les artistes ont travaillé pour la librairie. L'illustration, véritable journalisme du crayon selon Théophile Gautier, devient pour beaucoup un lieu de passage, un tremplin pour la notoriété et le plus souvent un lieu de relégation. Car l'illustration, jugée populaire, industrielle et mercantile, a mauvaise presse. L'illustrateur, quant à lui, se voit souvent accusé de trahir la pensée de l'écrivain, tandis qu'il souffre à son tour d'être trahi par les graveurs de reproduction. Rodolphe Topffer (1799-1846), peintre frustré, professeur, romancier et critique d'art, doit sa renommée à la fortune inattendue de ses histoires en estampes, rebaptisées "bandes dessinées". C'est l'exemple typique de l'écrivain tenant la plume et le crayon, le modèle de cette double vocation si fréquente à l'âge de la fraternité des arts. L'illustration de ses uvres par lui-même pose en des termes exemplaires la question centrale de l'autographie par rapport à la gravure de reproduction. J.-J. Grandville (1803-1847), tout au long de sa carrière, a réfléchi à la condition de son métier, défendu sa position de "professionnel" de l'illustration et lutté pour revaloriser le statut de l'illustrateur. Ses relations complices ou conflictuelles avec éditeurs, écrivains et graveurs révèlent les tensions qui caractérisent la librairie illustrée sous la Monarchie de Juillet. Gustave Doré (1832-1883) est certainement le plus célèbre des illustrateurs. Il est devenu l'incarnation de son métier jusque dans les moindres détails de son style de vie, de son comportement, de son corps même. Sa soumission tragique et paradoxale à l'étiquette de l'illustrateur, alors même qu'il se destinait au grand art, jette un éclairage sur le fonctionnement de la critique, sur la domination symbolique exercée par la hiérarchie des genres et des techniques. ////// Philippe Kaenel écrit l'histoire sociale des illustrateurs au XIXe siècle.
