Octavo, bound in full modern morocco by Sangorski & Sutcliffe / Zaehnsdorf with gilt titles to the spine, all edges gilt, gilt inner dentelles, marbled endpapers, frontispiece, title page vignette, illustrated with color lithographs. Paul Hogarth was a British illustrator and reportage artist known for his expressive, documentary-style drawings that brought a dynamic visual realism to literary works by authors such as Graham Greene, George Orwell, and Brendan Behan. Sassoon's "lightly fictionalized autobiography of his early years in Kent, in which he figures as the narrator George Sherston, was an immediate success, was awarded the Hawthornden and James Tait Black memorial prizes, and was quickly accepted as a classic of its kind an elegy for a way of life which had gone for ever. He continued the story in Memoirs of an Infantry Officer (1930) and Sherston's Progress (1937)" (ODNB).

The Limited Editions Club signed limited edition of the second volume in Sassoonâs semi-autobiographical Sherston trilogy. Octavo, bound in full modern morocco by Sangorski & Sutcliffe / Zaehnsdorf with gilt titles to the spine, all edges gilt, gilt inner dentelles, marbled endpapers, title page vignette, illustrated with color plates. Boldly signed by illustrator Paul Hogarth on the colophon page at the rear. One of 2,000 numbered copies, this is number 106. In fine condition. Illustrated by Paul Hogarth. Paul Hogarth was a British illustrator and reportage artist known for his expressive, documentary-style drawings that brought a dynamic visual realism to literary works by authors such as Graham Greene, George Orwell, and Brendan Behan. Siegfried Sassoon (1886â"1967) was a British poet, novelist, and soldier whose work profoundly shaped the literary response to World War I through its unflinching portrayal of the psychological and moral toll of modern warfare. Initially known for his idealistic early poetry, Sassoon gained prominence with his searing anti-war verse written from the trenches, marked by irony, stark realism, and a deep sense of disillusionment. His later prose, particularly the semi-autobiographical Sherston trilogyâ"Memoirs of a Fox-Hunting Man (1928), Memoirs of an Infantry Officer (1930), and Sherstonâs Progress (1936)â"further explores the transition from youthful innocence to wartime trauma. A key figure among the war poets, alongside Wilfred Owen and Robert Graves, Sassoon is recognized not only for his literary contributions but also for his outspoken protest against the war, which challenged both military authorities and prevailing patriotic sentiment.
