Durch die Veröffentlichung seines provokanten 23-seitigen Werkes in der Sammlung zwangloser Abhandlungen aus dem Gebiete der Nerven- und Geisteskrankheiten erlangte der zuvor weitgehend unbekannte Möbius große öffentliche Aufmerksamkeit.
