The Rijksmuseum collection. is so vast that you only act on acquisitions that will truly add something, or when the quality is so high that it outshines a comparable piece already in the collection. Moreover, we buy to exhibit, not to obtain material for scholarly comparison. The Rijksprentenkabinet and the department of history form an exception, since there we are actually building so-called 'reference collections'. When you are appointed the director of an institution like this one, there is a sense of intense modesty that comes over you; you think: How should I know what it is that this enormous collection does not yet have? It was different at the Van Gogh Museum. There we had a very small collection to which I was able to add breadth context - with the acquisition of some 150 paintings, pastels and sculptures, including not only paintings and drawings by Van Gogh, but also works by Courbet and Monet, Denis and Redon. But at the Rijksmuseum you.
