Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. Oversized hardcover, weight 1415g, 224 pages, illustrated throughout, pictorial endpapers, NOT ex-library. Book is clean and bright with unmarked text, free of inscriptions and stamps. Gentle handling wear. Issued without a dust jacket. -- Hidden behind Amsterdam's stately canalside buildings is a green and tranquil world. A revelation brought to life in the form of a book. The history and beauty of Amsterdam's canalside gardens in word and image, in 224 pages and 200 figures. -- When the central canal belt was planned in the seventeenth century, there were strict regulations, called statutes that prohibited people from building on and dividing the gardens. Following a period of negligence, there has been a considerable revival of interest in the canal house gardens these past years. This book is an initiative of Stichting de Amsterdamse Grachtentuin [Amsterdam Canal House Gardens Foundation]. Photographer Harold Strak captured the canal house gardens in photographs for an entire year, during all seasons. The essay written by art historian Koen Kleijn and author Renate Dorrestein is a pointed and entertaining capriccio. -- Contents: A Brief History of Gardens in Amsterdam's Ring of Canals [Gardens in the city; Old city, New city; The design; The fourth expansion; Style and enjoyment; Trees; The garden in the city; Gardens outside the city; Culture and Science; Exotica; Medicinal herb garden; A new garden; The country house; The washing, the vegetables, the water butt; Merry bacchanalia; Respectable folk; Horses and carriages; Reposing; Free nature; The growth of the city centre; Past and present; Garden design from 1950; Lifestyle]; Happy Few; Garden Views -- "If you buy a house on a canal in Amsterdam, it comes with a garden. The designers of the ring of canals wanted that: they stipulated that the plots that went with the houses in their new city should be filled with green, not with brick. They believed that the combination of handsome houses and handsome gardens would contribute towards shaping an ideal city. In the 17th century a garden was an interesting new element in the life of a citizen with taste and status, something which offered cultural enjoyment, responsible pleasure and social standing. Wealthier Amsterdammers had begun to take an interest in plants and gardens in the course of the 16th century; now a large part of the city's population had access to this new phenomenon. Over the century gardening became extremely popular; from time to time it was truly a rage. What form did the people living on the canals give to their gardens? What did they look at? What elements were there in the culture of Amsterdam and its surroundings at the beginning of the 17th century that determined the layout of their new garden.".…

Softcover. Condizione: Fine. Ongewijzigde herdruk in paperback.…
