A few pen scribbles to the the title page from the annotator's hand around the Aldine device. Fourth edition of the letters of Paulus Manutius, Ciceronian of note, third son of Aldus Manutius and successor to the Aldine Press.

Valuable first edition of Paulus Manutius s learned and celebrated commentary on the 16 books of Cicero s letters to his closest friend Titus Pomponius Atticus. The youngest son of Aldus, Paulus (1512-1574) was a very influential publisher and one of the most prominent humanists of the Late Italian Renaissance. A master of the epistolary genre with very successful collections both in Latin and vernacular, he was especially engaged in Latin literature, and a passionate Ciceronian. His outstanding reputation as a scholar was built upon his editions and commentaries on the works of Cicero: no man had a juster conception of the beauties of this great Roman orator and philosopher, and no man has more successfully imitated his style (Dibdin). The greatest orator of the Late Republic, Marcus Tullius Cicero (106-43BC) was a Roman statesman, lawyer and scholar. Although he was a homo novus , namely the first in his family to achieve public office, he soon became one of the leading political figures of the era of Julius Caesar, Pompey, Marc Antony and Octavian. Perhaps the most valuable of Cicero s surviving works are the letters, such a vivid commentary on the last years of the Roman Republic as we have of no other period of ancient times. Here alone, devoid of formality, the character of Cicero and his contemporaries can be seen; and a picture appears of life two thousand years ago () all the domestic detail which is elsewhere lacking () historical facts that would otherwise have been lost or deliberately concealed. Written over the course of many years from 65BC onwards and compiled by Cicero s personal secretary Marcus Tullius Tiro, the letters to Atticus are frequently written in a subtle code to mask their political content. In his impressively detailed commentary Manutius is clearly aware of this, discussing the implications of certain names and places thoroughly, explaining their relationships to each other and explaining historical and social significance as appropriate. Interesting provenance. Johan Berck was most likely Johan (Jan) Berck (1565-1627). Council secretary and pensionary of Dordrecht (Netherlands) in 1590s, he was appointed first Dutch ambassador to Venice in 1622, from where he returned to Dordrecht in 1627. Berck was an educated man who studied Law in Leiden. The first edition of Ars Historica by the renowned Dutch theologian Gerardus Vossius, printed in Leiden in 1623, is dedicated to him. Berck s chaplain during the Venetian period was Andreas Colvius, a learned man and correspondent of Decartes who spent his time in Venice collecting books and manuscripts. It seems that Berck shared Colvius passion for books and brought this copy back to the Netherlands with him. In the 18th century, this volume was owned by M. Johannes Ehrenricus Koch , very likely the German scholar M. Johann Ehrenreich Koch, from Wittenberg in Saxony: his name is recorded in a list of academics of the Christian-Albrecht University of Kiel (Holstein, Germany) under the year 1720. He was born in Wittenberg, where he obtained his master s degree in 1709. Unfortunately, his career as a professor was not particularly successful and his class remained empty without an audience for two years . After receiving a gift of 800 Reichstalers in 1733, he resigned. A good copy of this remarkable first Aldine edition, with an interesting ownership history.

COMPLETE SET, BEING AN UNUSUAL PAIRING OF THREE BOOKS IN TWO VOLUMES, LONG IN THE VADUZ CASTLE LIBRARY, CONSISTING OF TWO SEPARATE EDITIONS, BOUND DIFFERENTLY (AND INTERESTINGLY); JUDGING FROM AN EARLY OWNER'S INSCRIPTION (IN ITALIAN), THESE TWO BOOKS HAVE BEEN TOGETHER FOR AT LEAST A CENTURY. The first volume (dated 1558) consists of Books 1-2. It is an excellent example of a 16th-century Italian "temporary" binding (no doubt original) which perfectly reveals its construction. The textblock (Lib. 1-2) is sewn onto 4 alum-tawed supports (one at head and tail). As commonly, these straps are laced outside the limp vellum "wrapper" along the joints, and then back inside where they have remained unattached for more than 450 years. There is evidence of two pair of leather ties (one small fragment remains). The bespoke "forwarding" may have been done at the Giglio printshop or by a Venetian bindery closely associated with it. Of additional bibliographic interest are the nine different paper stocks utilized for printing this copy, which are clearly discerned along the lower edge of the textblock. The second volume (dated 1564) consists of Book 3 which was printed -- and largely written -- by Paolo Manuzio (Paulus Manutius); the text is bound in 18th- or early 19th-century stiff boards with pronounced raised joints. In this instance the textblock was sewn on two cords, without endbands. The upper cover of the second volume is inscribed in a nineteenth-century hand: "Questo terzo volume accompagna l'edizione del Giglio 1558." The provenance of this set is notable: a sixteenth-century inscription on the title-page reads "Guliani de Eherys" (i.e. Eherus). This is a Northern European (Estonian?) name, thus exhibiting the incredibly wide influence of Aldine editions. The armorial bookplate of the Princes of Liechtenstein are pasted inside the covers of both volumes. The text contains correspondence to/from "many noblemen" including Lorenzo de Medici, Giovanni de Medici-later Pope Leon, Francesco Maria Duca de Urbino, Cardinal Bembo, Michelagnolo Buonarroti, Annibal Caro, Dona Isabetta, Pietro Aretino, Boccaccio to la Fiammetta, and Francesco Petrarca, among others. Paolo Manuzio (1512-1574) is the third son of the famous Venetian printer Aldus Manutius, who assumed management of the Aldine Press following a four-year dispute with his uncles over its operation. Paolo's major scholarly contributions are corrected editions of Cicero's letters and orations, his own epistles (as here), and a Latin version of Demosthenes's "Philippics." Lib. 3 features the famed Dolphin and Anchor printer's device on the title-page and final leaf. Ad. 1: Adams 590. EDIT16 CNCE 25850. Ad 2: Adams 591. EDIT16 CNCE 28241. Not in Dibdin. Reverend Samuel Willard was a colonial clergyman. The Reverend Willard was pastor of the Third Church, Boston, from 1678 until his death. Samuel Willard played an important role in the halting of the Salem witch trials. Born in 1640 to a privileged family, Willard had a long simmering devotion to the Puritan church, a devotion he would later cultivate at Harvard College. Despite his religious fervor, Willard appears to be man of uncommon calm, as he urged caution in the accusing and trying of witches. Willard also denounced spectral evidence, claiming that the devil could impersonate even the innocent by appearing in their shape. After the trials ended, Willard was to push hard for reconciliation between the pro-Parris and anti-Parris factions of Salem Village. He strenuously opposed the witchcraft trials, and served as acting president of Harvard from 1701 to his death in 1707.

Considerably enlarged and revised 5th edition of Manutius' celebrated commentary on Cicero's letters to his intimate friend Titus Pomponius Atticus, compiled by Cicero's secretary Marcus Tullius Tiro (68-43 BC). The commentary is followed by biographical notes on Atticus and by a comprehensive index.Paolo Manuzio (1512-74), third son of Aldo the Elder, founder of the Aldine press, was a distinguished humanist renowned for his own letters composed in Ciceronian style. He handed over control of the Aldine press to his son Aldus junior in 1561 when he moved to Rome to accept a commission by Pope Pius IV to manage a papal printing house. His redaction of Cicero's letters was the main source for all later editions of the text. A good copy with a contemporary manuscript ownership entry on blank verso of last index leaf. USTC 840485.

Large Aldine anchor & dolphin device with legend 'Aldus Iunior' on 1st and 2nd titles and at end of all 3 parts; miniature woodcut portrait of Aldus Manutius the Elder within architectural border (58 x 56mm) on verso of 1st and 2nd titles. 18th century quarter sheep; gilt, title label; marbled boards. A collection of the celebrated Latin epistles in Ciceronian style by the Venetian scholar - printer Paolo Manuzio (1512-74), third son of Aldo the Elder (1449-1515), founder of the famous Aldine press. The letters, dated between 1558 and 1570, were edited and printed by Paolo's eldest son Aldo the Younger ('Aldus Junior' 1547-97) who had succeeded to the family business in 1561, when his father left for Rome to manage the Tipografia del Popolo Romano for Pope Pius IV. Aldo the Younger was a professor of literature who wrote a treatise on Latin spelling. The 3rd part contains Paolo Manuzio's dedicatory prefaces to his redactions of the classics. Indexes at the end of the volume list the names of the 124 recipients of the letters, and the names of the 28 dedicatees of the prefaces. Paolo Manuzio is chiefly known for his contribution to scholarship through his redactions of finely printed editions of Cicero's letters and speeches, for his Latin translation of Demosthenes' Philippics (1549) and for his studies of Roman antiquities. The circular woodcut portrait of his father, Aldus Manutius the Elder is surrounded with the legend : Aldus Pius Manutius R.; the architectural border comprises the Aldine arms and motto 'Insigne Manutianum'. Several early ownership entries on 1st title , occasional marginal notes and underlinings, some contemporary notes in brown ink on verso of last leaf. A good copy; top blank margins lightly cropped not affecting text ,inner margin of index waterstained, minor traces of usage only. Renouard (3rd edn) pp212-213, no 7; USTC no 840490.
