Softcover. Condizione: Fine. Faint shelfwear else fine.; 312 pages; The Soul of Tragedy brings together top scholars to offer a wide range of perspectives on Greek tragedy. The collection pays homage to this ancient, enduring theatrical and literary genre by offering a deep exploration into the oldest form of dramatic expression…. It is a reminder that, for all their years, these dramas still have much to teach us. Exemplary of the nature and scope of this book, the essays range from Simon Goldhill's comparative study of music, gender, and culture to Martha Nussbaum's inspection of "the comic soul." Through the critical lenses of psychoanalysis, gender, social history, and philology, this compilation looks at Greek tragedy's peculiar power to illuminate the workings of the human soul. Structures of tragic meaning, the relationship between character desire and spectator experience, and investigations of tragedy's extraordinary preoccupation with gender reveal the form's emotional core and explain its rapid ascent through the hierarchy of cultural practices in classical Greece. The Soul of Tragedy is a celebration and a model of collaboration that will be essential reading for scholars in classics, literature, and drama.

Aggiungi al carrelloReprint, stapled. Condizione: Gut. p.105-114. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of the ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - With dedication by the author V. Pedrick. - An impeccable copy. - From the text: In the lively discussion following the 1984 APA panel on audience…-oriented criticism at which these papers were presented, members of the audience raised two general questions about this type of criticism. First, what precisely is audience-oriented criticism and what is its relationship to reader-response criticism? Second, what is so radical about this kind of criticism? Havent classicists been using it all along? This introduction addresses both questions. As Peter Rabinowitz points out in his essay in this volume, the types of criticism we are concerned with share an object of study, not a methodology, and since some of its extreme versions are inextricably linked with the term reader-response, we have chosen the term audience-oriented, a less loaded expression, and one that more accurately reflects the extent of this new field of inquiry. Reader- or audience-oriented criticism allows for a wide variety of approaches, each of which focuses attention on the audience rather than on the author and his/her motivations to write, or on the text as a self-contained and static entity.' From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of the ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - With dedication by the author to W. Haase. - Author's name underlined on cover, otherwise good and clean. - From the text: The meaning of any poe…m depends upon its readers reaction; whether they believe what they read, are moved by it or left indifferent is important for their perception of what that poem finally means. Ancient lyric poetry is particularly attentive to its audience, but Catullan poetry is striking in its eagerness not simply to engage readers but actually to control their reactions to the text.
