Eine Publikation des Schweizerischen Instituts für Kunstwissenschaft SIK-ISEA… ( uvrekataloge Schweizer Künstler 19/1+2)Die Gemälde Die Völlerei (Die Sinnesfreude) und Die Heilsarmee (Die geistige Freude) beide 1964 entstanden sowie das Selbstbildnis (1975) machten Varlin (eigentlich Willy Guggenheim, 1900 1977) zu einem der bedeutendsten Maler der Schweiz. Nach einer Lithografenlehre in St. Gallen studierte Varlin 1921 1923 an der Unterrichtsanstalt des Kunstgewerbemuseums Berlin. 1923 1932 lebte er in Paris, wo er die Académie Julian, die Académie André Lhote und die Académie de la Grande Chaumière besuchte und 1927 den Kunsthändler Leopold Zborovski traf. Der Entdecker von Modigliani und Soutine nahm auch ihn unter Vertrag und gab ihm den Künstlernamen Varlin. In Zürich, wo Varlin 1932 1963 lebte, und danach in Bondo im Bergell schuf Varlin sein umfangreiches Werk. Band I umfasst die mit Dokumenten, Fotografien und Bildern illustrierte Biografie sowie eine Einführung ins Gesamtwerk. Band II dokumentiert Varlins Schaffen mit Verweisen auf Bilder, die in Briefen, in der Literatur und in Katalogen erwähnt sind. Die CD-ROM enthält alle im Werkkatalog aufgeführten Bilder und ermöglicht die Suche nach verschiedensten Kriterien, etwa nach Titel, Entstehungsjahr, -ort, Sujet, Technik oder Format. «Meine Bilder wenden sich an alle, die guten Willens sind, an Metzger, Bräute, Zahnärzte, Hotelportiers, Serviertöchter, Verwaltungsräte, Stadtpräsidenten, Dirnen, Soldaten, Generäle.» Varlin.
