L'autore non si limita tuttavia a fornire una sintesi distaccata del pensiero sociologico contemporaneo, ma porta un suo contributo attivo, chiarendo alcune confusioni e incongruenze sul perché i sistemi sociali persistono o mutano, senza entrare nel merito della polemica sui modelli dell'integrazione e del consenso o della coercizione e del conflitto; e questo non tanto per un rifiuto della polemica, quanto per la convinzione, fermissima nell'autore, che non è utile continuare a presentare, come si fa oggi, modelli e teorie non necessariamente antagonistici come autentiche alternative.
