Paperback. Condizione: New. Print on Demand. This book contends that the teachings of the Jesuit order during the 16th and 17th centuries led to the erosion of foundational Christian doctrines like original sin and the necessity of Divine Grace. The author demonstrates how Jesuit theologians recast traditional views of sin and r…edemption to minimize culpability and maximize human agency. The book locates the roots of modern ideas of personal autonomy and the minimization of sin within this early Jesuit reworking of Christian tenets, shedding new light on the development of modern religious and secular thought. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Very Good. First Edition. RARE. ANTIQUARIAN FIRST EDITION FROM 1667. WRITTEN IN FRENCH. Title very loosely translated into English: "The Moral Of The Jesuits, Faithfully Taken From Levrs Books Print With Permission And Approval Of The Svperievrs Of Le Levr Compagnie. By A Doctor Of Sorbonne. The Progress t…hat these Men will make will have its limits; for their folly will be known to everyone. 2. Epist. from S. Paul to Timothy, Chap. 3 v.9."Hardback. All vellum leather binding. Handwritten lettering on the spine, presumably from the period. Printed on laid paper. Introductory pages contain advertisement(s), preface, table of contents, all unpaginated. Illustrated with lovely ornamented engravings and flourishes in black and white throughout. The last, unpaginated page contains "Fautes a corriger dans le corps du livre" or loosely translated, "Errors to be corrected in the body of the book". Several pieces of handwritten antiquarian ephemera laid in throughout. 755 pp. ABOUT THE AUTHOR: "The renewal of the Church of France in the seventeenth e century owes a lot to personalities such as Jean Duvergier de Hauranne, Abbot of Saint-Cyran, mother Angélique Arnauld, or the theologian Antoine Arnauld, but also to figures as endearing as Angélique Arnauld d'Andilly, Jacqueline Pascal or Nicolas Perrault. More or less well-known figures of a new generation which will help to profoundly change the face of a Church in the grip of an essentially political power struggle and bring it back to its primary spiritual and theological duties. Almost exactly contemporary, the theologian, born in 1624, and the nun, Jacqueline Pascal, one year his junior, who died less than a month apart, in 1661, have marked, each in their own way, the universe. in which they lived, the Faculty of Theology for the first, the world of the convent for the second. [.] A last work, published anonymously, attests to the roots of N. Perrault's reflection: La Morale des Jésuites, faithfully extracted from their books, print with the permission and approval of the Superiors of their Company . By a doctor from the Sorbonne, In Mons, chez la Veuve Waudret, 1669, in-4 °, 757 p., With a? Denouncing the accommodating morality of the Jesuits, the book was referred by the Archbishop of Paris, Hardouin de Péréfixe, to the Faculty of Theology, which there raised outrages and lies: it was condemned by a decree of the Parliament of May 13, 1670." Nicolas Perrault, theologian of Port-Royal 1624-1661 byJean Lesaulnier, CAIRN.INFOCONDITION: This antiquarian edition is in overall "very good" condition with wear and discoloration to the vellum, with two 1/2" wear-through gouges to the front cover. Label on the spine bears the name "Inside endpapers show wear. Perrault" written in ink. Front hinge is weak, yet binding is remarkably tight. Some moderate crumple to the front flyleaves, but does not compromise any text. Vintage note written in French taped to the recto side opposite the title page. Pages are predominantly free from marginalia, except for the name of a previous owner written in ink within the front pastedown, also presumed from the period. All edges have toned as expected. Even as several areas throughout bear light dampstain, and pages hold a slight wave, the leaves have absolutely beautifully and evenly toned with very little foxing or discoloration for being over 350 years old. An absolutely gorgeous edition. Beautiful to add to any antiquarian book collection. At over 3 lbs., due to the size and weight of this edition, additional postage may be necessary. Additional photos available upon request. Full refund if not satisfied.
