Ever since the work of Jacob Burckhardt in the 19th century, the Renaissance has retained its unbroken grip on art historians and the general public. The completion of restoration work in the Sistine Chapel, which has shown Michelangelo's frescos in a new and more colourful light, has recently tightened that grip. And in these times of easy travel, almost anyone can see great Renaissance art on the spot, in the galleries and churches of Florence, Rome or Venice and the many other cities which are themselves the sites of some of the world's most breathtaking architectural achievements. This book aims to provide a thorough introduction to the Renaissance in Italy, accompanied with the finest illustrations. The works are the main thing: reinforced by an expert text, the reproductions provide a rich trove to guide the art lover through the field. Essays by various hands analyse these works, linking them to the history and ideas of the times and creating a carefully nuanced overall picture of the Renaissance. Certain key developments widely associated with the Renaissance are shown to have been the achievements of the late Middle Ages. The evolution of the chief genres of architecture, sculpture, painting and draughtsmanship is followed in detail. The individual artists and circumstances that prompted the most innovative developments are described. If the mythologized view of the Renaissance as an idealized Golden Age, a view established in the 19th century, is questioned in the course of this inquiry, there can still be no doubt that the manifest glorious accomplishments of the Renaissance richly deserve our admiration.

Jahrhunderts hervorgebracht hat. Sie hat mit ihren beiden Vorgängerinnen am Nord- und Südpor…tal des Baptiste-riums so wenig gemein und fällt auch sonst so sehr aus dem Rahmen der bestehenden Traditionen heraus, daß die Entstehung ihres revolutionären Konzeptes noch heute als rätselhaft gilt. Der vorliegende Kunststück-Band versucht das Rätsel durch eine Neuinterpretation der Vorgeschichte der Tür zu lösen. Er zeigt, daß Ghibertis Innovation in gewisser Weise vorprogrammiert war. Ghiberti war bei der Konzeption seiner ersten, heute am Nordportal befindlichen Tür (1403-24) gezwungen gewesen, sich an das gotische Rahmensystem der seit 1336 vorhandenen Südportaltüre Andrea Pisanos zu halten. Er hatte seine Bildideen nur unter Inkaufnahme eines eklatanten ästhetischen Widerspruches zwischen Rahmen und Gerahmtem ausdrücken können. Das wachsende Bewußtsein dieses Widerspruches führte zwangsläufig zur Entwicklung eines neuen Gliederungssystems. Altersgemäß etwas gebräunt, sonst aber gut und sauber.
