Die im Laufe der Jahre aus Herdraum und Kammer verbannten Platten waren häufig schon ? zu Altmaterial bestimmt ? eingeschmolzen oder dienten Jauchegruben, früher Kaminköpfen, als Abdeckung. Sammler dieser Platten richteten durch Veröffentlichungen in heimatkundlichen Schriften ebenso ihr Augenmerk aul diese gußeisernen Produkte wie vor allem die 1962 erschienene Publikation Sigrid Theisens, Der Eifeler Eisenkunstguß im 15. und 16. Jahrhundert (s. Literaturverzeichnis). Zwischenzeitlich haben Kamin- und Ofenplatten in den Antiquitätenhandel Eingang gefunden, werden diese als Raritäten bewertet. Die über 260 Exemplare umfassende Sammlung des Museums konnte zusammengetragen werden aus Handel und Privatbesitz. Am ursprünglichen Standort noch eingebaute Platten wurden nur in geringer Zahl vorgefunden, so daß sich über die Herkunft der Sammlungsstücke generell keine Aussagen machen lassen. Den Grundstock des Bestandes, der in einem kleinen Ausschnitt erstmals 1968 in der Kommerner Ausstellung ?Volkskunst im Rheinland" vorgestellt wurde, bilden die Sammlungen Wintrich, Trier, und Hieronimi, Cochem. Nicht nur die Eifeler Hütten sind mit ihren Gußprodukten vertreten, sondern ebenso pfälzische, saarländische, elsässische, lothringische, hessische und schwäbische Gießereien. Die ältesten Platten entstammen dem Ende des 15. Jahrhunderts, die jüngsten der zweiten Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts. Vam Bestandskatalog ist versucht worden, die Herdgußplatten ? soweit dies möglich ist ? einzelnen Hütten, wenigstens bestimmten Landschaften zuzuweisen. Dies kann mit Hilfe der bisherigen Untersuchungen in manchen Fällen nicht immer zweifelsfrei geschehen. Ein Handbuch zu diesem Thema, das vom Amt für rheinische Landeskunde, Bonn, erarbeitet wird, mag hier zukünftig größere Klarheit schaffen. Der Bestandskatalog richtet sich vor allem an die zahlreichen Sammler von Herdgußplatten, Herkunft und Alter bestimmen zu helfen.
