Januar 1961 in Paris, Frankreich) war ein französischsprachiger Schweizer Dichter und Abenteurer. Mit sechzehn lief er von zu Hause weg. Seine Reisen führten ihn mehrfach um die Erde; auch besuchte er Russland, die Mandschurei und China. Als junger Mann führte er das Leben eines Abenteurers und versuchte sich in verschiedenen Berufen, bis er Medizin und Philosophie in Bern studierte. 1910 kam er erstmals nach Paris. Freundschaft u.a. mit Apollinaire, Chagall, Robert und Sonia Delaunay, Léger, Modigliani. Spätere Reisen führten den Schriftsteller u.a. nach Rom (1921), Brasilien (1924-1928) und Spanien (1931). Ab 1950 lebte Cendrars in Paris, wo er 1961 starb. Sein Gesamtwerk umfasst etwa 40 Bände. Cendrars versuchte sich unter anderem als Imker und als Kressezüchter, als Fremdenlegionär und als Schausteller (aus Wikipedia).
