Gebräunt. - Mit dem Neudruck der ersten drei von den insgesamt sechs Lectures on the Recorder Christopher Welchs liegt eine der frühesten neuzeitlichen Studien zur Historie, Bauart und Literatur der Blockflöte vor. Das Buch erschien erstmalig 1911 und zählt noch heute nach rund 50 Jahren zu den Standard-Werken der Blockflöten-Literatur. Anerkennung und Dank Edgar Hunt, der dieses wichtige Werk, das jahrelang vergriffen war, neu edierte und mit einer Einführung versah! Ihr Entstehen verdanken die Lectures einem Vortrag über das Auftreten der Blockflöte in der Literatur, den Welch im Jahre 1898 vor der Musical Association hielt, um - wie er schreibt - "einen Teil der Dunkelheit aufzuhellen, in die das Instrument zu jener Zeit noch gehüllt war". Im Jahre 1902 folgte ein zweiter Vortrag über Hamlet und die Blockflöte. Da das allgemeine Interesse an seinen Forschungsergebnissen wuchs, fügte Welch wenige Jahre später seinen zwei Lectures vier weitere hinzu und faßte sie zu dem Buch Six Lectures on the Recorder and other Flutes in Relation to Literature zusammen. In seiner Lecture I geht es Welch darum, verschiedene zweifelhafte Stellen in der Literatur aufzuklären und anhand zahlreicher Zitate aus alten Schriften Einblick zu vermitteln in die Geschichte des Instrumentes. Mit großer Gründlichkeit versucht er aufzuzeigen, daß der Name Recorder sich zurückverfolgen läßt bis in die Mitte des 14. Jahrhunderts, und daß er sich auf das für die europäische Musikgeschichte bedeutendste Glied aus der großen Familie der Kernspaltflöten bezieht, auf die Blockflöte mit acht oder (bei rechts- und linksseitiger Bohrung des Kleinfinger-Griffloches) neun Grifflöcher .
