Jahrhundert grundsätzliche Streitigkeiten über das Fortleben angeblich antiker germanisch-deutscher Rechtsriten entwickeln konnten, soll zunächst der Blick auf ein norddeutsches Kaufmannsschicksal geworfen werd…en. Der Lübecker Kaufmann Michael Schröder wurde von mehreren Schicksalsschlägen hart getroffen. 1696 geboren, heiratete er 1727 eine Lübecker Bürgerstochter, doch starb seine Frau bereits zwei Jahre später. 1751 verehelichte er sich erneut, aber auch seine zweite Frau verstarb nach nur einem Jahr. Beide Frauen hatten eine Tochter geboren, und vielleicht um diesen Kindern eine Mutter zu geben, heiratete Michael Schröder am 29. März 1734 erneut. Seine dritte Frau Anna Sara Wessel war gerade einmal 17 Jahre alt und damit über zwanzig Jahre jünger als ihr Gemahl. Wirtschaftlich war diese Vermählung für Schröder ein wichtiger Schritt nach oben. War Anna Sara doch die Tochter des wohlhabenden Kaufmanns Joachim Wessel, der zusammen mit seinem Schwiegervater Küsel die angesehene Wessel-Küselsche-Kompaniehandlung gegründet hatte. Zum Zeitpunkt der Eheschließung war Joachim Wessel bereits verstorben, doch war seine Witwe in die Handelsgesellschaft eingetreten und als Kauffrau anscheinend erfolgreich. Zur Heirat erhielt Anna Sara von ihrer Mutter 6.000 lübische Mark als Brautschatz ausgezahlt, während die übrige väterliche Erbschaft weiterhin in der Wessel-Küselschen Kompanie verblieb. Michael Schröder wagte es auch nicht, die Auszahlung des väterlichen Vermögens zu fordern, da er meinte, es sei keine Gewohnheit in Lübeck, bey Lebzeiten der Schwieger-Eltern ein mehres zu fordern, als Sie gutwillig gegeben hätten. Hätte er nämlich mehr als die gezahlten 6.000 Mark gefordert, würde er sich prostuiret haben. Außerdem sei seine Schwiegermutter noch viel reicher gewesen als der bereits verstorbene Schwiegervater, so daß er der Witwe die Verfügungsgewalt über ihr Vermögen auch nicht habe streitig machen wollen. .
