Particularly hard hit was the central commercial area and 258 people died. Although it was Great Depression time rebuilding the city was quickly underway and in some ways the experience of Santa Barbara, California, which been devestated by earthquake six years earlier, provided the model. Thus, today both Napier and Santa Barbara are regarded as the best examples of Art Deco architecture extant and for both this is an important part of their heritage.
