paperback. Condizione: Very Good in Wrappers. No Jacket. Madera. 2010. Poetic Matrix Press. 2nd Revised Paperback Edition. Very Good in Wrappers. 9780982427668. 6 x 9, full color cover, 51 black & white photographs, 13 drawings, 10 maps, references, index. 198 pages. paperback. keywords: Nature Hiking California John Muir. DESCRIPTION - A Guide for hiking from San Francisco to Yosemite. With an account of the original 1868 trip by John Muir. This fascinating book really includes three books in this single volume. It's a guidebook for a walking/cycling route across California that follows John Muir's footsteps from San Francisco to Yosemite via the Pacheco Pass. It's an adventure book that tells the story of Peter and Donna Thomas' 2006 ramble across California to discover that route. And finally it is a history book, presenting in its entirety and for the first time, the complete story of John Muir's first trip to Yosemite. Muir took that trip in 1868, the year before Muir's First Summer in the Sierra, and it has never been published before, existing in obscurity in Muir's various writings, until it was reconstructed by Peter and Donna in preparation for their walk to Yosemite in his footsteps. The Thomases' Muir Ramble Route covers 305 miles divided into seven sections. Each section contains both directions for through hiking and a recommended trip that can be completed over a long weekend. The Thomas' offer several options for various sections: day hiking, backpacking, mountain biking, even canoeing. They suggest lodging options where available, and camping options wherever they are available along the route. They discuss advantages of walking versus cycling, how to plan vehicle shuttles, public transportation where available, and clothes and equipment suggestions, maps too. The Thomases have crafted a thoughtful and thought-provoking book that provides abundant information for the task at hand. inventory #46537.…

hardcover, dust jacket. 4to. hardcover, dust jacket. 446 pages. In 2020, Peter and Donna marked the forty-sixth year of their remarkable collaboration. This Bibliography features more than 163 editioned books by them, 374 one-of-a-kind books by Donna, and 63 unique books made by Peter, as well as books made by them in collaboration with other artists and during workshops, all illustrated in full color. This compendium of the output of their press includes not only bibliographic entries and production notes, but also personal commentaries for many of the entries, transforming a straightforward bibliography into a kind of memoir. These annotations provide a distinctive window into the lives of these two working artists, enriching our understanding of their works in ways that go far beyond the descriptive. This Bibliography not only offers the scale and scope of their production and their evolution as distinctive American book artists, but also insight into the development of their lives as a couple, as parents, and as colleagues and professional partners. Unusual ephemeral items having to do with Peter & Donna Thomas and their private press. "In 1976 they established a private press. At that time their goal was to create books in the tradition of the great private presses: limited editions, made of the finest materials and produced with the highest standards of quality. They printed their first book in 1978, and spent the next ten years producing "fine press" books in both full size and miniature format. To assure that the books they made reflected their intent, they always made the paper, print and bound the books completely by themselves. In the late 1980's, concurrent with the infusion of new energy which spread through the book arts community when it was introduced to the personal computer, the Thomas' vision of the book they wanted to create expanded beyond simply "fine press". They began to work in new formats, exploring non-traditional book structures and shaped book objects, as both limited editions and one-of-a-kind books. In 1992 they printed Good Books, a bibliography of their work. This lists over fifty titles, representing many authors and a wide range of subjects, but the Thomases are not just publishers: they are artists who work in the medium of the book." Handmade paper by Peter Thomas with folded blue paper covers over stiff card stock, light blue paper wraps with pieces of old manuscript vellum indentures interwoven through wraps, paper label lettered in black, the handmade paper had been produced at the Wookey Mill. Today, although the mill is run as a tourist attraction, some paper is still being made there by hand. In September of 1988, Peter Thomas and Gillian Spires visited Wookey Hole and afterwards met with Cyril Finn, a vat man who had recently retired from that same mill. At the end of their interview Cyril said, 'If you want to meet a really old papermaker, you should go to Wells and meet the man who trained me.' So they set up a meeting the next week with Harry Glanville who was then ninety-two years old, born on the thirteenth of August 1896 in Hurst-Batch, Somerset. A beautifully printed work on handmade paper from the Wookey Mill. A fine copy. …

This lovely miniature book, by the incomparable book artists Peter and Donna Thomas, presents a single linoleum cut by Donna in a scroll format; it would become the Book Society Distinguished Award, 1999. Peter and Donna Thomas started their press in 1976; in 1988 they changed the name of their press from the "Good Book Press" to their names. They are "one of very few presses where the proprietors write the text, create the art for the illustrations, make the paper, handset the type, print on a letterpress, and bind the book" (n.b., Bradbury p. 302). The "four views" in the title consist of one pictorial - Donna's linocut - and three literary. The first being partial lyrics of the Johnny Noble song "I want to go back to my little grass shack in Kealakekua, Hawaii"; the second a description of "Karakakooa Bay" (as it was then called) by Captain James Cook in 1779, and the third being the description of the bay by Mark Twain when he saw it in 1866. Scarce in the marketplace, as of this writing we see no copies online, our search of OCLC locates twenty-two of the seventy-five copies with institutions. ___DESCRIPTION: Scroll, case-bound in patterned paper (handmade by Peter) over boards, with one linoleum cut by Donna, a single illustration on a label on the cover, the scroll wound onto a dowel set in a handmade koa rack, with the other end of the scroll attached to a brass rod that acts as a handle for unwinding the scroll; handmade paper, printing both letterpress and polymer plate, the handset types being Canterbury and Centaur, 2.875 " by 1.75", a single scroll measuring 22 ", this no. 46 of 75 copies. ___CONDITION: Fine; the case clean and without wear, the scrolling action operable, the scroll itself clean and without wear; as new. ___CITATION: Peter and Donna Thomas Bibliography no.
