The sheet is further printed for the Bristol office of Annie Kenney, giving her title as "West of England Organizer" and the office address at 37 Queen's Road, Clifton. A scarce survival from the formative years of the WSPU.

Old horizontal and vertical folds, otherwise very good. The sheet bears an exceptional contemporary "Votes for Women" watermark depicting the Union's emblem and slogan, visible when held to the light. An attractive Women's Social and Political Union letter written on behalf of Emmeline Pethick-Lawrence, one of the movement's principal leaders and Honorary Treasurer. The printed heading names many of the leading figures of the suffrage campaign, including Mrs Pankhurst, Mrs Pethick-Lawrence, Miss Christabel Pankhurst, Annie Kenney, Elizabeth Robins, Mary Neal and Charlotte Despard's contemporary colleague Mrs Wolstenholme Elmy. Written shortly after the great Albert Hall meeting of April 1912, the letter thanks the recipient on Mrs Pethick-Lawrence's behalf, recalling "that beautiful procession of representatives of the Local Unions at the Albert Hall Meeting" and the significance of the gifts presented there. It continues that "the hearts of all the Leaders are filled with joy and pride in the splendid spirit of all their colleagues in this Movement and with a sense of complete confidence that they will bring our flag to victory." Particularly noteworthy is the paper itself. Rather than ordinary stationery, the letter is written on specially manufactured WSPU paper incorporating a large "Votes for Women" watermark. It includes a history of the paper, forms through which to subscribe, order the bound compilation, and advertise in the journal, and a six-point list of advice on how to promote the paper, such as selling it in the street and putting up posters. The suppleme…nt was included with the 24 September 1909 issue. The WSPU were well-aware of the importance of press coverage, but, although they invited press photographers to all of their events, there was "a lack of interest by the press in the women's suffrage movement unless windows were broken" (Crawford, p. 460). This led to the Pethick-Lawrences founding the movement's own weekly paper, Votes for Women, in 1907. The couple continued to edit it even after their split from the WSPU and worked tirelessly to increase its circulation; supplements such as these were used to encourage a wider readership. The book is bound in the original purple half-leather, over purple, white and green cloth covered boards, showing the emblem of the W.S.P.U. and lettered in gilt, the spine has loss to both ends and is splitting at… the hinges and the corners are bumped and scuffed, the boards are somewhat marked, bumped and rubbed. The text block is age browned and slightly marked, with cracking at points, and some small chips and closed tears to the edges of the earlier and later pages, which are becoming brittle. Contains issue nos. 1 to 29, the first 7 monthly, becoming weekly from issue no. 8 onwards. The first bound volume of the famous suffragette newspaper, a somewhat battered and fragile example, however quite uncommon in an original unrestored binding.

Pethick-Lawrence comments that she "had no idea I should be so immensely [underlined] delighted with this book. I should like every girl & boy of 17 to have this book put int…o their hands". In the rest of her letter, Pethick-Lawrence elaborates that "in absence of people's enlightenment & training [Lady Chatterley's Lover] would be the best kind of initiation into manhood and womanhood." The recipient of the letter appears to have sent Pethick-Lawrence the book, as she signs off "Many thanks! [underlined] I shall keep this book to be re-read". Lady Chatterley's Lover was first published in Florence in 1928. The second edition was designed to discourage the numerous pirate editions that were already in circulation, as described by Lawrence in his introduction. The uncensored text did not legally appear in the UK until the 1960 Penguin edition was published; the unlettered red boards may have been intended to disguise the book. Roberts & Poplawski A42c. Octavo. Contemporary letter tipped onto title page verso (177 x 144), written in black ink on both sides. Contemporary red cloth, edges untrimmed, original brown wrappers bound in at front and rear. Bookseller's stamp on inside rear wrapper, single sheet of quotes from the text tipped onto p. [3], pencil marks to rear pastedown. Spine leaning and a little sunned, extremities gently rubbed and bumped.

Aggiungi al carrelloA scarce run of the first four collected editions, decorated with Sylvia Pankhurst's bold iconography. The issues were bound and sold by the publishers at the end of each print run, as advertised in an insert for the 24 September 1909 issue. The success of the periodical resulted in the larger format volumes from 1909 onwards. V…otes for Women was founded by the Pethick-Lawrences in 1907 to publicize news relating to the WSPU's campaign, including details of upcoming demonstrations, information on suffragette incarcerations, and updates on political developments. The journal also included portraits of leading figures, articles and opinion pieces supporting the movements, satirical cartoons, theatre reviews, and limericks. It was in Votes for Women that Frederick coined the term the "Cat and Mouse Act" for the Prisoners (Temporary Discharge for Ill-health) Act. By September 1909, the paper had reached a monthly circulation of over 30,000 and initiated a wider "resurgence in the suffrage press" (Mercer, p. 187). The advertisements represent brands and companies associated with the movement, such as Mssrs J. and A. Miller's "Suffragette Soap - made and used by suffragettes". Many of the companies represented were either run by or employed women: Farrow's Bank advertised their new branch "controlled and worked by women". Bound volumes of Votes for Women are rare in commerce, appearing just twice at auction in the last ten years. We have traced one bound copy of Volume I at UCL and one bound copy of Volume III at Royal Holloway; unbound collections of the periodical are found at 13 locations in the UK. The book is firmly bound in dark green cloth, the boards with bevelled edges and a slightly inset decorative panel, showing the flags of six British women's suffrage organisations, held by a bird flying out of t…he setting sun, the flag of the W.S.P.U. prominently to the fore, a handy code to let prospective readers know that the book contained the militant as well as the more peaceable suffragists. The boards are slightly bumped, rubbed and marked. The text block is slightly foxed, marked and a little age toned. An excellent little book, surprisingly well produced using good quality paper and cloth, and almost certainly paid for or subsidised, as Drane was not a publisher prone to expend more than necessary on works published at his own risk. It contains an impassioned Preface by the editors making it clear that the book encompasses all those engaged in the struggle for women's suffrage, whether by peaceful or militant methods: "we cannot allow this occasion to pass without recording our sincere admiration at the cool courage displayed by the militant section of this great woman's army and their splendid leaders, and in doing so we feel we are not one whit detracting from the high value we attach to the more peaceful methods of the constitutionals". The editors choose to open with a piece on each of the three major leaders, Emmeline Pankhurst (Women's Social and Political Union), Millicent Fawcett (National Union of Women's Suffrage Societies) and Charlotte Despard (Women's Freedom League). The book then alternates between militant and peaceful suffragists, including Christabel Pankhurst, Annie Kenney, and Charlotte Carmichael Stopes. It is a fascinating snapshot of the British women's suffrage movement at a critical juncture, giving important and prescient first-hand contemporary accounts of the major actors, making reference to recent arrests and to Emmeline Pankhurst's famous speech at Bow Street Court in October 1908. It is notable that the word "suffragette" is avoided, having been coined as a derogatory term by a Daily Mail reporter in 1905, it had yet to be fully reclaimed by the W.S.P.U. as a moniker to be celebrated. The militant suffragists at this juncture were keen to demonstrate their femininity having been accused of being man-like in the press, and it is no surprise that Christabel Pankhurst, who was considered to be the originator of the militant tactics, is described as charming, passionate, graceful, elegant and pretty, before it is made clear that she is also fearless, determined and dauntless. It is quite an uncommon title in commerce and not especially plentiful in institutional holdings.
