Rica encuadernación de época en pleno cuero; ambos planos y lomo profusamente ornamentados con motivos dorados; cantos dorados. Muy buena edición de epístolas selectas de San Jerónimo publicadas en Paris a principios del siglo XVII. Nació en Estridón, ciudad ubicada en los límites entre Dalmacia y Panomis, aproximadamente entre los años 340 y 342; murió en Belén el 30 de Septiembre del 420. La actividad literaria de San Jerónimo, aunque bastante prolífica, puede ser resumida bajo algunos pocos títulos principales: trabajos en la Biblia; controversias teológicas, trabajos históricos, diversas cartas, traducciones. El vino, como sabemos, aparece citado en numerosas ocasiones en las epístolas de San Jerónimo; en este ejemplar el copioso índice nos ayuda a encontrar las referencias:Vinum libidinis incendium; vinum nos bibere, bonum; vinus puellus prohibendum; etc. No en Simon. No en Vicaire. El vino está presente a lo largo de esta obra, como lo podemos encontrar en el índice y a largo de sus páginas. A pocket devotional edition of the letters of Jerome (Eusebius Hieronymus) c. 347.420, biblical translator, scholar and ascetic who gave up reading pagan literature after a dream where he was accused of being not a Christian but a Ciceronian (cf. With full page engraved frontispiece in volume 1 (scene from the gospel) by Berterhain. Good set. Chief work of the Dutch born jesuit Petrus Canisius (1521-1597) is his triple "Catechism". In 1551 King Ferdinand I asked the University of Vienna to write a compendium of Christian doctrine, and Canisius wrote (Vienna, 1555), at first for advanced students, his "Summa doctrinæ christianæ . . . in usum Christianæ pueritiæ", two hundred and eleven questions in five chapters. His catechism for students of the lower and middle grades, "Parvus Catechismus Catholicorum" (later known as "Institutiones christianæ pietatis" or "Catechismus catholicus"), is an extract from the larger catechism, written in the winter of 1557-58; the German edition appeared at Dillingen, 1560. During his lifetime, versions of Canisius popular explanation of the Roman Catholic Doctrine and view on Christianity appeared in more than 200 editions in at least twelve languages. Our copy is a rare Dutch translation of a German version (in the 5th edition, 1764) of the Catechism reworked and edited by Sebastianus Schmid who was a parish priest in the German town of Röttingen am Ries. Small stamp on first free endpapers. Title-page of volume 1 loose and damaged at edges without loss of texts; some marginal dampstaining; light marginal annotations in pencil; Damage to letterpieces, 2 missing; very slight wear to capitals and edges.
