Hardcover. Condizione: new. Hardcover. Ancient Sardis, the capital of Lydia, was of outstanding importance: in the Lydian period it held the residence of the kings and subsequently, under Persian rule, the satraps. Throughout antiquity it remained an administrative center. Travelers of modern times and archaeological excavations have revealed, from the city site and its surroundings, inscriptions written mostly in Greek, some in Latin. Their texts deal with all kinds of subjects: decrees, public honors, civil and sacred laws, letters, epitaphs, and more.In the corpus "Sardis VII 1" (1932) W. H. Buckler and D. M. Robinson published all inscriptions (228 items) known up to 1922, after which year excavation at Sardis came to a halt because of the Greek-Turkish war. Since excavation resumed in 1958, a portion of the Greek and Latin inscriptions has been published in various, widely scattered places; another portion, containing important texts discovered during the last ten years, was until now unpublished. The aim of this monograph is to present in a comprehensive corpus the entire epigraphic harvest (485 items) made in Sardis and its territory since 1958. Each inscription is accompanied by a description of the monument, bibliography, translation, and commentary; indices, concordances, photographs, and maps complement the collection. The capital of Lydia was of outstanding importance as the residence of the kings and satraps. Georg Petzl presents a comprehensive corpus of epigraphic finds since 1958. Each inscription is accompanied by a description of the monument, bibliography, translation, and commentary; indices, concordances, photographs, and maps complement the collection. weicher Einband. 236 S. Abb. 4° Br. Sprache: Englisch.

Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. In Greek and Roman antiquity, Lydia was a flourishing area of Western Asia Minor. Its civic life is richly reflected by the many inscriptions, mostly written in Greek (some of them also in Latin), which have survived until our days: legal documents, petitions directed to emperors, religious texts (e. g. rules of a cult-association, dedications, a magic incantation), prosaic and metric funerary inscriptions, which contain interesting material for research on the history of mentality, etc. In order to make these sources available to the Classical scholarship, it is necessary to publish them, furnished with translations and commentaries, in corpora. For some parts of Lydia such publications exist (though, because of the constant increase of fresh material, they should partly be updated): for the Caystrus valley (I.K. 17) and for Sardis (Buckler-Robinson, Sardis VII 1); the Northeastern part is the area dealt with in TAM V 1, the Northwestern in TAM V 2. In the present fascicule TAM V 3, G. Petzl publishes approximately 540 inscriptions originating from the city of Philadelphia (Alasehir) and its territory. He furnishes each of them with description, bibliography, German translation and an appropriate commentary. A detailed index, including also legends and representations on coins, a topographical map and 31 plates conclude the book. In Greek and Roman antiquity, Lydia was a flourishing area of Western Asia Minor. Its civic life is richly reflected by the many inscriptions, mostly written in Greek, which have survived until today. Condizione: Gut. S. 201-223, 4 Taf. Sprache: Deutsch Gewicht in Gramm: 550 Sonderdruck, Klebebindung in Papiereinband.

Hardback. Condizione: New.
