Papierbedingt gebräunt. - Wenn nicht mehr allein gefragt wird, was eine Apollonfigur für die Stilgeschichte ausgibt, sondern wenn eine Zeit selbst ins Auge gefaßt wird, wie sie Apollon gesehen und geformt hat, ist uns eine so gebietende Gestalt überhaupt erst erreichbar. Notwendige Prägung und notwendige Abfolge der Bilder in den Epochen des Adels, der Tyrannis, der Perserkämpfe, des Perikles, des peloponnesischen Krieges, der bürgerlichen des 4. Jahrhunderts, Alexanders und der hellenistischen Herrscher stehen im Schicksalsgang des griechischen Daseinswandels. Eine solche umfassende Geschichte des Apollonbildes kann freilich heute noch nicht geschrieben werden, denn es fehlen noch gründliche Einzeluntersuchungen, die vor allem in der Vasenmalerei das Entstehen und Absterben der Mythen und den inneren Wandel eines Bildtypus durchgängig darstellten und als sinnbildlich begriffen. Es fehlt eine tiefere Auswertung der Münzbilder und für die Darstellungen des Hellenismus die genaue Kopienkritik, die schwierige Typengeschichte und die geistige Durchdringung des Formensynkretismus.
