Chinese side stitching. A remarkably well-preserved copy. Very fine. Rare thus. The first description in Chinese of China's four sacred Buddhist mountains in Sichuan Province. It was published in the summer of 1891. This bilingual edition (with parallel text) was published in 1936, and includes approximately 60 mountain scene illustrations along with lengthy captions. 46 poems are also printed. With the approval of the Guanxu Emperor, Huang Shoufu oversaw the Chinese edition between 1887 and 1891. Tang Zhongyue, a poet and artist, visited Omei Mountain to make sketches for the illustrations. The translator, Dryden Phelps, was an American missionary. Mount Omei is a 3,099-metre-tall mountain in Sichuan Province, the highest of the Four Sacred Buddhist Mountains of China.

This part of the journey involves navigating numerous sharp turns and steep inclines, making it a physically demanding segment of the pilgrimage or trek. The name "99 Turns" emphasizes the arduous nature of the climb.
