CONTENTS: Briefe und Aufsätze -- Farbenlehre -- Gedich…te und Märchen -- Anmerkungen und Verzeichnisse. - »Die innere brennende Sehnsucht ist der Quell, woraus alle meine Kraft, alles, was ich hervorbringe, entsteht; ohne diese Sehnsucht bin ich nichts als ein unbesaitetes Instrument.« Diese bekenntnishaften Sätze schrieb der fünfundzwanzigjährige Philipp Otto Runge im Juli 1802 aus Dresden an den Jugendfreund Enoch Richter. Briefe und Schriften Runges geben Aufschluß über Weltverhältnis und Kunstverständnis des neben Caspar David Friedrich bedeutendsten Vertreters der deutschen Frühromantik, sind geschichtswissenschaftliche Quellen ersten Ranges und zudem biografische Zeugnisse einer außergewöhnlichen Persönlichkeit. Runge sah seine Lebensaufgabe in der Begründung einer neuen, den Klassizismus und Historismus überwindenden Kunst: »Ich will mein Leben in einer Reihe Kunstwerke darstellen; wenn die Sonne sinkt und wenn der Mond die Wolken vergoldet, will ich die fliehenden Geister festhalten.« Der romantisch-spekulative Idealismus, der sich künstlerisch in dem »Zeiten«-Zyklus manifestiert, hat seinen Gegenpol jedoch in einem wachen Wirklichkeitsverhältnis, das sich im täglichen Leben bewährt und auch in der Kunst seinen Ausdruck findet. Hierfür stehen das bedeutende Porträtschaffen Runges und auf kunsttheoretischem Gebiet die Untersuchungen zur Farbenlehre, deren Ergebnisse er 1810 mit der »Farbenkugel« veröffentlichte. Runge hat auch - angeregt durch die Bemühungen Arnims und Brentanos um die deutsche Volksdichtung - die Niederschrift der plattdeutschen Märchen »Von den Fischer un syne Fru« und »Von den Machandel Bohm« besagt, die die vorliegende Ausgabe der Briefe und Schriften abrunden. - Unter Runges Briefpartnern sind berühmte Namen: Goethe, Schelling, Brentano, Arnim und Tieck. Den Charakter seiner Korrespondenz prägen jedoch die Briefe an die Freunde, die Buchhändler Besser, Richter und Perthes und die Maler Böhndel und Klinkowström, vor allem aber diejenigen an die Geschwister, die Eltern und seit 1802 an seine Braut und spätere Frau Pauline Bassenge.
