Verder behandelt de publicatie de institutionele ontwikkeling van het bedevaartsoord, waaronder de oprichting van de Broederschap van O.L.V. van Loreto in 1679, de rol van kluizenaars door de eeuwen heen, de vernielingen tijdens de Franse bezetting en latere restauraties van het complex. De combinatie van historische feiten, mondelinge tradities en illustraties geeft een genuanceerd beeld van de rol van de kluis en kapel in de volksdevotie, heemkundige context en regionale geschiedenis van Belgisch Limburg.
