Papierbedingt leicht gebräunt. - Philips Konincks gewaltige Panoramalandschaften gehören sicherlich zum Schönsten, was holländische Landschaftskunst hervorgebracht hat. Um so mehr muß es befremden, daß Arnold Houbraken, der Künstler und Kunstschriftsteller, dem wir die ersten Nachrichten über unseren Künstler verdanken, in der kaum dreißig Jahre nach Konincks Tod verfaßten "Groote Schouburgh" mit keinem Wort seiner Landschaftsgemälde gedenkt. Er spricht von Koninck nur als Bildnismaler und von seinen Historien und "zinrijke vertoonzelen", von denen uns auch einige erhalten sind, die aber künstlerisch kaum das durchschnittliche Niveau der Zeit erreichen. Doch wäre es voreilig, daraus den Schluß zu ziehen, daß Konincks Kunst von seinen Zeitgenossen völlig verkannt worden wäre. Houbraken indessen scheint von Konincks Landschaften nichts mehr gewußt und auch von den anderen Darstellungen kaum Originale gesehen zu haben, denn seine blassen Schilderungen sind - wie die Zitate zur Genüge beweisen - nur verkürzte Abschriften von Joost van den Vondels Lobgesängen auf Konincks Gemälde. Vondels Verständnis für die bildende Kunst ist nun freilich recht bescheiden3, ihn interessiert mehr der Gegenstand als die Kunst der Malerei; von Konincks Landschaften schweigt auch er. Dabei hat er Koninck gut gekannt, er war sogar mit ihm befreundet, wie G. Brandt, Vondels Bio-graph, berichtet und Konincks zahlreiche Vondelbildnisse beweisen. Diese Bildnisse hat Vondel besungen und noch einige andere, an denen er die sprechende Naturähnlichkeit lobt, und außerdem einige historische und mythologische Szenen; alles Themen, die zu beschreiben ihm wichtig schien.
