The supposed author John Phillips was the godson and nephew of the poet John Milton by whom he was brought up and for whom he acted as assistant secretary when Milton was Latin Secretary to Oliver Cromwell, often reading aloud for the blind poet. However later he seems to have turned against Puritanism issuing a fierce satirical attack upon it, "A Satyr Against Hypocrites". Bookplate of Léon Duchesne de la Sicotiere pasted to inside of front cover. Period library stamp to title page. Fautes a corriger page at rear. Full contemporary vellum bowing and shrinking somewhat, bumped at corners and head and foot of spine, and partly worn away at top front corner. Front hinge cracking. Title once painted and gilded onto spine, now faded. Pages browned and slightly undulating. 2 rear endpapers have corners torn away. Ow good.
