Slight foxing to wraps, else Fine. One of 200 copies, unnumbered. Paul Peter Piech (1920-1996) was born in Brooklyn to Ukrainian parents. Stationed by the US Army in England during WWII, he moved there to pursue a graphic arts career in advertising. In his free time he operated the Taurus Press, finding expression for his liberal voice while perfecting his idiosyncratic design aesthetic. With work marked by pleasantly harsh lines and distinctive, abrasive imagery, Piech owes more to Erich Heckel and Die Brucke than the mushy rainbows-and-unicorns ethos of the hippie era in which he worked. That said, he was just as inclined to print the word "Dicktator" above an image of Richard Nixon; his use of Old Glory, positioned sideways to show the stripes as prison bars, prompted a formal protest, 1979, from the American Embassy in London. The recent revival of interest in Piech's work has created a steady focus on his oeuvre. He has entered the pantheon of worthy printer-designers of his era.
Hardcover. Condizione: Near Fine. Forest cloth gilt, DW, 8vo., 37, (1) pages. Five delightful linocuts by Piech in as many colors. One of 550 copies printed by Skelton's Press. A fine copy in a near fine DW with light soiling to the rear cover and with the price on the flap neatly revised in ink, in archival mylar.

Piech (Paul Peter, 1920-1996). While working in advertising, Piech was able to set up his own printing press called Taurus Press and he began to produce stunning prints. His political work often has a brutal punch, he also touched on other interests of his such as literature, Welsh poetry and jazz. But it's Piech's political posters, in his signature lino-cut style, that he's best known for. His commitment to challenging falsehood, fighting apathy, and supporting the oppressed is what makes Piech so worthy of celebration 100 year after his birth, in our current turbulent times. His work is dazzling, innovative and bold with the use of bright colours in a style quite unlike any other artist.

His work is dazzling, innovative and bold with the use of bright colours in a style quite unlike any other artist. Piech (Paul Peter, 1920-1996). Tyger Tyger by William Blake, [1987] Lithograph in two colours. Sheet size 61 x 22 cm. The Tyger' is one of William Blake's Songs of Experience, the companion-piece he wrote in 1794 for his earlier Songs of Innocence (1789). The Songs of Innocence and of Experience (they are usually regarded as one larger, interlinked work) were intended to convey, and explore, 'the two contrary states of the human soul'. The Tyger is the 'experience' poem which corresponds to, and complements, 'The Lamb' in the earlier Songs of Innocence. Is Blake suggesting, through this interesting duality, that our souls are made up of both meek, innocent, and gentle elements (the lamb) and terrifying, unpredictable, and wild elements (the tiger)? here is something wild and unpredictable about the creature but there is also something pleasingly ordered and 'correct' about its proportions, and the patterning on its hide (that 'fearful symmetry'). Price £275.
