In-4° (260 x 20 mm), pp. VIII, 114, (2), 10 tavv. f.t. incise in rame e più volte rip. legatura coeva in mezza pelle, titolo su tassello e fregi in oro al dorso. Prima edizione francese. Questa opera rese celebre Camper poichè descrisse per la prima volta l'angolo facciale e dettò le regole per una misurazione craniometrica. Prese in considerazione i diversi visi e caratteristiche facciali attraverso le diverse epoche rapportandole alle diverse variazioni del clima. Tratta anche dei diversi canoni di bellezza studiati secondo criteri craniometrici. Camper disegna la linea di continuità che lega gli uomini alle altre creature, con l'intento di dimostrare come l'apertura dell'angolo facciale sia proporzionale all'intelligenza. L'angolo si restringerebbe gradualmente, secondo una linea di progressiva bestialità, dall'europeo all'africano per arrivare fino alla scimmia. Sebbene non si tratti di un'ipotesi nuova, tuttavia, grazie all'artificio grafico adottato, la continuità tra la forma della testa dell'africano e quella delle scimmie, una volta visualizzata, sembra mostrare con evidenza il presunto passaggio tra uomo e animale, passaggio che fino ad allora era stato solo ipotizzato e di cui il 'nero' era fatalmente l'anello mancante. Tale teoria verrà in seguito distorta e strumentalizzata per giustificare la schiavitù, il razzismo e il genocidio.
