Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. This biography by Pierre Champion is titled "Henry III, Roi de Pologne - 1573 - 1574. But Henri was more that the King of Poland . he was Grand Duke of Lithuania (which came along with the title of King of Poland), but he was also the King of France from 1574 to 1589 - at which time he was assassinated. Sounds complicated, and it was, as were almost all of the lives of the ruling elite at that time. Henri was the fourth son of King Henri II & Catherine De' Medici. Being fourth in line, he did not expect to become heir to the throne, but his elder brother, Charles IX of France died unexpectedly, and Henri found himself Roi de France. Prior to that he was known, title-wise, as Duke of Angoulême and Duke of Orléans, then as Duke of Anjou from 1566. Relationships between various countries were complex, and due to a number of circumstances, Henri III was elected to the throne of Poland - Roi de Pologne. Hardly a year had passed when Henri was informed of his brother's death and his elevation to the crown of France. He quickly fled Poland back to France . where he was invested with that high office. I doubt the Poles did not appreciate Henri disappearing in such an abrupt manner. The story doesn't end there, but for what must certainly be one of the more complex biographies that you might read, I highly suggest the book here offered . Look for the picture with the blue border The book, was issued in paperback format, and this copy was handsomely rebound with a cloth spine and marbled boards, There is a leather title label on the spine with gilt lettering. (This type of binding is known as a quarter-binding, with the material of the spine extending onto the boards for about a third of the distance (this varies), and the boards - as with this book - covered with beautifully marbled paper). As a further point of interest, the end-papers are marbled with a different design. It is a very handsome binding. One other point of binding interest is that the title page, the half-title and the front blank leaf are all cancels (normally a cancel replaces original leaves), in this copy these leaves are presented on a completely different type of paper. Cancels are usually done for various reasons, but why it was done for this book is a mystery to me. The original paperback cover is bound into the book. CONDITION -- VERY GOOD PLUS -- This is a previously owned book that remains clean and attractive , with the following particulars noted : EXTERIOR -- Title label on spine is ragged on its left side; top text-block edge has a bit of light spotting, else the exterior is clean and attractive with negligible signs of handling BINDING -- Solid. INTERIOR -- Re the cancel leaves that have been bound in (being a completely different type of paper); the caption for the plate illustration facing page 56 has been overlaid with a correction - (done by the binder or original owner) - this was done a bit awkwardly, leaving a glue smudge and one letter pf the original caption still showing. The papers used for the illustrations have toned beyond the sepia of the pictures. Else the interior is clean and free of marking. DUST-JACKET -- None issued.
