An early edition of this important work, first published in 1782.A complete four volume set bound over two volumes.Illustrated with monochrome wood engraved headpieces.Bound in contemporary full calf, with gilt tooling and red morocco spine labels, retaining the original endpapers, blanks and half titles.Pierre Choderlos de Laclos' important French epistolary novel, following the story of the Marquise Isabelle de Merteuil and the Vicomte Sebastien Valmont, two former lovers, as they destroy each other and others. The work is written in the form of letters written between the characters. The work is considered to be a representation of the corruption of the French nobility, and was very successful, often seen to be one of the most important early French novels and being adapted into multiple plays and films.Written in the original French. Bound in contemporary full calf, retaining original endpapers, blanks and half titles. Externally, joints starting at the heads, with slight wear, rubbing to the extremities, joints and raised bands, and a minor chip to the head of the spine to 'Vol I'. Minor spotting to the endpapers. Lettres Recueillies dans une Socie?te? Et Publie?es pour instruction de quelques autres par C*** De L***. Tomes Premier and Second. Pirate edition. 8vo., I: half-title, frontispiece, title, [1p.], pp-7-415 & half-title, frontispiece, title, [2pp.], pp-3-398, 5 plates. II: half-title, frontispiece, title, [2pp.], pp-3-398, 5 plates, page 39 misnumbered '36'. All plates in both volumes captioned. In matching contemporary blue marbled paper wrappers, with titles in black on a white spine label on each, the wrappers pasted to the half title and title respectively of a book from the time, on watermarked paper with the lower half of the ?grappes de raisin' with an ?F' on another leaf, untrimmed with very wide margins, English bookseller's notes in pencil in front of first volume and '20frs' in sepia ink in the back, French text. Londres [Paris], n.p., 1796 but probably 1815. £500.00 Dog eared, dusty, some water staining, missing at least one plate from the first volume an insertion to pages 28-29 and 2 others, the top halves of each half title removed, lower edges of one or two plates very dusty (not affecting image), another plate caught in the dog eared leaves and another worn on the lower margin, roughly opened in places. Possibly issued with tissue guards for the plates. The foreedges are worn with splits on the hinges. Gay 850 for the first edition etc and the true 1796 edition. In van Beveren who suggested 1815. ESTC T125277. Rare in the original wrap- pers. The BL copy wants for 6 plates including the frontispiece. Seemingly no copy in Harvard. A fake publication of the great epistolary novel, the imprint of ?Londres' suggests Paris and it is often the case of vice versa with other erotic books from the last three centuries published on either side of the Channel. ESTC cautions 'Matchers beware' and suggests that the wavy line above the date in this book rather than double straight ones, ?An 4' as a date on the first frontispiece and an 8 line title identifies it as a rip off of the true 1796 edition ( referencing Henri Cohen's guide to fake books with engraved plates). The BL's copy of the true first has ?An 4' on the frontispiece. ESTC also sug- gests papier Marais. The wavy lines are present but this cataloguer counts 7 lines not 8, and is unsure of the paper stock and the frontispiece is undated, all of which are identified by Cohen as the other points of issue for a nineteenth-century piracy. No collation is offered for how many plates should be present (though we feel that is moot with any pirate ? for as it is an illegal printing what exactly constitutes a complete copy anyway?). The true edition for 1796 has 2 frontispieces and 13 plates in all including the frontispieces, sug- gesting we are missing 3 illustrations. The engravings by Monnet, Fragonard fils et Ge?rard, en- graved by Baquoy, Duplessis-Bertaux, Dupre?el, Lemire, Patas, Pauquet and Simonet are celebrated in their own right and indeed good imagery is vital to any great erotic book from the libertine era. There are indeed other copies on the market identical to the copy in hand, citing Cohen and 1812. however unlike those leather bound copies, the solution as to what year those copies (and this one) were published may well lie in the wrapper lining from the 1815 first edition of ? Description des catacombes de Paris' by Louis E?tienne Franc?ois He?ricart-Ferrand published by Bossange et Masson, who legally published an edition of ?Liaisons' in 1820. Either way, whether 1812 or 1815, this is a fascinating copy in an ?English' state, before trimming and rebinding and retaining an original set of wrappers with an intriguing wrapper lining. The fak- ing of this particular 1796 edition explained by Gay's estimation of it as being '.la plus belle e?dition de cet ouvrage.' and one that sold for 67 Francs at auction at the dispersal of the Comte de La Be?- doye?re's very grand library in 1837 and which had doubled in price by 1877. The novel is dedicated to the art, force and effects of cruelty and seduction in the Ancien Re?gime. It was a bestseller of the time and was a succe?s de scandale , arguably subversive of the old order even though Marie Antoinette had a copy that was '.richly bound, but, as a sacrifice to modesty, bore no title on the outside.' ? ( xii ? Richard Aldington introduction reprinted in the Routledge edition of ?Li- aisons'). Aldington also notes that there were some 50 pirated editions and that, despite the great sales and succe?s de scandale , Laclos earned 1,600 francs apiece for the first and second editions, thus the '.the pirates must have robbed him of most of his possible gains' (op cit). Indeed, that great success continued well into the twentieth-century, the 1988 film starring Glenn Close, John Malkovich, Michelle Pfeiffer and Keanu Reeves took tens of millions of ticket sales and very positive reviews. The pirates, like this arguably ?best' one, had served the purpose of keeping the book in print and in readers' hands for far longer than Laclos could ever have envisaged. 243690. …
