Pierre Sébileau (1860-1953), chirurgien des hôpitaux en 1895, agrégé d'anatomie, se porta volontaire en 1899 pour "se spécialiser dans l'exercice de l'ORL", après 15 ans de chirurgie générale. "Une prédilection de vieille date pour l'anatomie et la patho…logie du cou m'entraîna vers l'ORL", expliqua-t-il lors de sa leçon inaugurale en 1919 (13). Ses compétences chirurgicales reconnues représentaient un atout considérable pour la nouvelle spécialité. En 1898, il avait publié un précis de "Thérapeutique chirurgicale des maladies du crâne". Il se fit élève à plus de 40 ans pour apprendre l'ORL dans une clinique de ville où exerçaient Luc et Lubet-Barbon, avant de devenir le principal responsable parisien de son enseignement.
