Le plan du maréchal Montgomery semble simple : s'emparer d'une série de ponts tout le long de l'itinéraire prévu pour le 30ème corps mécanisé britannique, à Eindhoven, Grave, Nimègue et Arnhem. Elaboré en à peine une semaine, ce plan qui a reconnu la faiblesse des forces allemandes en pleine retraite après le désastre de Falaise en août ne prend toutefois pas suffisamment en compte les renseignements fournis notamment par la Résistance hollandaise sur la présence de plusieurs unités SS dans le secteur d'opérations prévu. Mais est-ce là la seule raison de l'échec des blindés britanniques, le 25 septembre, à quelques kilomètres seulement de leur objectif final, le pont d'Arnhem, sur le Rhin inférieur, à 103 km de leur base d'attaque ? Dans ce livre qui paraît après le 70e anniversaire de « Market Garden » et qui constitue l'une des rares études récentes disponibles en français, l'auteur propose une réévaluation de cette opération sous l'angle du renseignement et de sa prise en compte (ou non) dans la planification opérationnelle, le tout dans le cadre d'une coalition marquée par les divergences entre Anglo-Saxons sur le meilleur endroit où porter le coup de grâce au Troisième Reich. Une attention particulière est portée à l'armée allemande. Sa déroute en Normandie a fait croire aux Anglo-Américains à tort que la Wehrmacht était incapable de reconstituer ses forces. Les planificateurs alliés ont donc trop sous-estimé la capacité de réaction allemande et les forces présentes dans les Pays-Bas. Une erreur classique pour qui sous-estime l'importance du renseignement dans une opération aussi risquée que « Market Garden » mais dont les chances de succès étaient loin d'être insignifiantes. Au final, n'aurait-il pas plutôt manqué une route supplémentaire au 30e corps pour atteindre son objectif final, le pont d'Arnhem ? "" **********************.
