The work was a collaboration between the Scottish diplomat Robert Playfair (1828-1899) and the celebrated German-born British zoologist Albert Günther (1830-1914). Günther was a remarkably active taxonomist, describing thousands of reptiles and fish, and authoring (and contributing to) an impressive range of lists and catalogues during his career.
